Supernatural-themed TV shows have become increasingly popular in recent years, tapping into audiences' fascination with the mystical, the magical, and the otherworldly. From Charmed and Bewitched to the darker tones of The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, the genre has evolved into a thriving market for both binge-watchers and fantasy fans.
With the success of Netflix’s Wednesday, a modern take on the iconic Addams Family character, interest in supernatural content has reached new heights, and Disney is now taking advantage of this momentum.

While Disney has always been associated with magic, from its beloved animated films to the fantasy-laden worlds of its theme parks, the company has also been dipping its toes into the supernatural genre. With Hocus Pocus 2 (2022) and Marvel's Agatha All Along both making waves on Disney+, it was only a matter of time before the studio began developing an original magical series of its own. And now, the much-anticipated project has officially been greenlit.
The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Disney has given the green light to Coven Academy, an original series that is expected to captivate audiences with its mix of witchcraft, humor, and drama.

The show follows a group of teenage witches living in New Orleans, a city famously known for its mysterious atmosphere and deep-rooted connection to the supernatural.
Coven Academy is an original premise from Federle that “follows a trio of teenage witches-in-training who are bound by destiny to guard their city against dangerous, ancient forces,” the logline reads. “Between unraveling dark secrets, mastering volatile magic, and facing off against distractingly cute rivals, they must also navigate the heartbreaks and deep bonds that come with growing up.”
“Coven Academy is an innovative format that blends supernatural intrigue with the friendships, challenges and self-discovery of the teenage experience,” said Disney Branded Television president Ayo Davis. “Under Tim Federle’s creative leadership, this magical high school comes alive with a breakout cast, continuing our tradition of creating stories and stars that connect deeply with today’s generation.”

This unique premise brings together both supernatural adventure and the relatable challenges of adolescence, promising an engaging mix of magical escapades and emotional growth. The magical elements will be paired with the ups and downs of growing up, offering both thrilling fantasy and heartfelt moments.
The series’ setting in New Orleans provides the perfect backdrop, with its historical and mystical aura elevating the magical experience of the show. From voodoo legends to the city's rich supernatural folklore, the location is as much a character as the witches themselves.
Tim Federle, known for his work on High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, is leading the project, bringing his knack for blending drama and comedy to the magical world of Coven Academy.

One of the most intriguing aspects of Coven Academy is that it’s an original creation, not based on any existing intellectual property. While Disney has experienced great success with franchises like Hocus Pocus (2022) and Agatha Harkness, Coven Academy will break new ground by offering an entirely fresh, original concept.
The cast of Coven Academy also includes Saved by the Bell’s Tiffani Amber Thiessen as Miss Graves, who will mentor the trio of witches-in-training. Joining her are Malachi Barton, Keegan Connor Tracy, Malina Pauli Weissman, and several other talented young actors, each bringing their own flair to the magical world.
With Coven Academy scheduled to premiere on Disney+ in 2026, the excitement surrounding the project is building. Fans of magical TV shows, especially those who have enjoyed the success of Wednesday and other supernatural-themed series, will likely be eager to see what this new series has to offer. Will it rise to the occasion and capture the hearts of Disney+ viewers?
