Disney’s Next Big Movie Will Officially Reveal ‘Doomsday’ First Look

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is preparing for another sweeping transition, and many of the franchise’s established heroes are preparing for whatever comes next. Disney has officially announced that December 19, 2025, will represent a key marker for the MCU’s evolving timeline.

Set for release in 2026, Avengers: Doomsday is positioned to stand among Marvel Studios’ most ambitious films yet. The project reunites Anthony and Joe Russo of Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019), with the story pivoting away from a Kang-focused direction toward Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr. in a much-discussed return to Marvel storytelling.

Marvel kicked off 2025 with a “chair reveal” livestream that showcased an extensive cast lineup, including Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes), Paul Rudd (Ant-Man), Simu Liu (Shang-Chi), Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Kelsey Grammer (Beast), and James Marsden (Cyclops).

The same event also solidified the return of several fan-favorite X-Men actors from the Fox era: Ian McKellen (Magneto), Rebecca Romijn (Mystique), Patrick Stewart (Professor X), and Alan Cumming (Nightcrawler). Their involvement signals a full blending of Marvel’s cinematic universes, connecting decades of storytelling.

As anticipation built, several longtime MCU actors commented publicly on their absence from the roster. Mark Ruffalo, who has portrayed the Hulk since The Avengers (2012), quipped on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, “They decided that it was better to get rid of me than for me to tell the end of the next movie.”

Ruffalo won’t appear in Doomsday, but he is confirmed for Destin Daniel Cretton’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026).

Brie Larson, meanwhile, has been careful when asked about continuing as Captain Marvel. Appearing on The View, she responded to a question about her involvement in Avengers: Doomsday by saying, “Thank you for asking, and you know I can’t answer.”

Her answer intensified speculation around Carol Danvers’ role in the film. In 2024, Larson told reporters, “I don’t have anything to say about that,” and in June 2025, she posted a mysterious photo beside the words “AVENGE” and “DANVERS.”

Larson last appeared in The Marvels (2023), which concluded with Teyonah Parris’s Monica Rambeau stranded in a separate dimension and Carol promising to bring her home.

Disney’s next major Avatar installment, Avatar: Fire and Ash (2025), directed by James Cameron, arrives on December 19, 2025. Several reports have suggested that Disney intends to use the film as the launch point for the first Avengers: Doomsday trailer.

“Collider has learned from multiple sources that the first footage from the MCU's next big team-up film is scheduled to be attached to the latest installment of one of Disney's other blockbuster franchises, Avatar: Fire and Ash,” the outlet reported.

If the plan holds, the teaser’s arrival would land exactly one year before Doomsday’s scheduled December 18, 2026 premiere. This approach echoes the promotional strategy for Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, which dropped a year early in front of Jurassic World Rebirth (2025) and featured a character-focused tease rather than a broad narrative showcase.

Shortly after those initial reports, the news became official: the Avengers: Doomsday trailer will debut ahead of Avatar 3.

I should also add that this trailer is 1 minutes and 27 seconds long. Contrary to the 60 seconds that was rumored.

The decision is a sizeable promotional opportunity for Marvel and Disney, though it may irritate fans who weren’t planning to attend Fire and Ash or who feel the strategy pushes them toward the Avatar franchise.

New marketing imagery has also spurred conversation about what the future holds for Thor and Captain Marvel. A high-resolution promotional piece showcased at the Walt Disney Studios Marketing Expo in Shanghai reveals close-up details on Doctor Doom’s armor, with two symbols featured on the cloak fasteners.

One symbol mirrors Captain Marvel’s starburst emblem, while the other calls back to Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir. Their symmetrical placement has prompted theories that these may be trophies taken from Multiversal variants rather than decorative touches.

While it’s possible the design is simply artistic, the imagery has heightened interest in Doom’s role and the extent of the changes coming to the MCU.

Marvel Studios continues refining its approach as it moves into Phase Six. The Fantastic Four: First Steps, released in 2025, opened strongly but experienced a sharp drop in its second weekend, demonstrating the challenge of sustaining audience turnout across multiple weeks.

Despite this, Marvel president Kevin Feige and the Russo brothers have stated that Avengers: Doomsday and its follow-up, Avengers: Secret Wars (2027), will operate as a creative refresh for the MCU, elevating the X-Men and reshaping the primary roster.

With Robert Downey Jr. stepping into the role of Doctor Doom and a cast that spans several eras of Marvel storytelling, Avengers: Doomsday is poised to be a turning point for the entire franchise.

When he’s not thinking about the Magic Kingdom, Thomas is usually reading a book, becoming desperately obsessed with fictional characters, or baking something delicious (his favorite is chocolate cake -- to bake and to eat). He's a dreamer and grew up on Mulan saving the world, Jim Hawkins soaring through the stars, and Padmé Amidala fighting a Nexu. At the Parks, he loves to ride Everest, stroll down Main Street with an overstuffed pin lanyard around his neck, and eat as many Mickey-shaped ice creams as possible. His favorite character is Han Solo (yes, he did shoot first), and his favorite TV show is Buffy the Vampire Slayer except when it's One Tree Hill. He loves sandy beach walks, forest hikes, and foodie days out in the Big City. Thomas lives in England, UK, with his fiancée, baby, and their dog, a Border Collie called Luna.
