After 54 Years, Disney World Replacing Historic Polynesian Resort Features

One of Walt Disney World Resort's original opening-day hotels is getting a refresh in several places at once. Unfortunately, this means that guests staying at Disney's Polynesian Village Resort right now will find construction underway throughout the resort, from the lobby building to the outdoor dining patio.

The resort's iconic central hub is home to the most visible active project. The Great Ceremonial House, which has anchored Disney's Polynesian Village Resort since the property opened alongside Magic Kingdom Park in 1971, is currently receiving exterior work on its vertical beams. Some have already been freshly repainted, while others remain visibly faded as scaffolding confirms crews are still working through the building. The structure houses the resort lobby, check-in, the Monorail station, ‘Ohana, Kona Cafe, Trader Sam's Grog Grotto, Capt. Cook's, and several merchandise locations.

Walt Disney World Resort schedules construction activity during daytime hours to minimize disruption for overnight guests, but visitors moving through the Great Ceremonial House should expect some visual and audible evidence of the ongoing work.

Next door, the Tonga Longhouse is also behind construction walls. Temporary metal stairs have been installed on the building's exterior, giving crews the access needed to repaint railings and doorways on the structure's outside facade. WDWNT shared this photo of the ongoing construction on Facebook:

The third active project at Disney's Polynesian Village Resort involves Tiki Terrace, the outdoor dining space connected to Trader Sam's Grog Grotto. The patio remains closed for refurbishment, with signage pointing guests toward indoor dining at Trader Sam's or other resort restaurants, including Capt. Cook's and Kona Cafe. Walt Disney World Resort has not announced a reopening date.
