Disney’s Rustic Resort Loses a Big Part of Its Charm—But There’s Still Hope

Florida’s springtime weather can be a rollercoaster, and right now, it’s created some serious wildfire concerns across Central Florida—including Walt Disney World. A new burn ban is now officially in effect, and it’s directly impacting guests staying at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground.

But before you panic about canceled memories and extinguished fun, there’s a silver lining.

Why the Ban Happened

Dry conditions, gusty winds, and hot temperatures have collided to create what’s known as a Red Flag Warning. That’s the National Weather Service’s way of saying fire risks are extremely high. Orange County, where most of Disney World is located, responded quickly with a countywide burn ban.

This ban automatically activates once the drought index crosses the 500 mark. And as of mid-April, that’s exactly what happened.

It might sound like just another weather warning, but this one has very real implications for how Disney can operate—especially at locations like Fort Wilderness, where outdoor fire activities are a key part of the experience.

What Guests Can Expect at Fort Wilderness

Campfires are practically a tradition at Fort Wilderness. Whether you’re grilling dinner at your RV site or gathered around the fire with your kids roasting marshmallows, it’s one of the things that sets this resort apart from the rest of Disney property.

But for now, those personal fire experiences are on hold.

Guests arriving at the resort are being met with signs making it clear: no wood-burning fires at campsites. That includes your standard fire pits and charcoal grills. Even those planning a cozy evening fire outside their cabin are being asked to pause those plans.

The ban applies to any open flame that hasn’t been permitted under special safety guidelines.

However, Disney isn’t leaving guests completely in the dark (pun intended). The Campfire Sing-A-Long—an evening event featuring music, marshmallows, and often Chip and Dale themselves—is still scheduled nightly. Disney is able to keep this going by using contained fire sources that meet safety requirements. It’s not quite the same as making your own fire, but it still delivers the atmosphere and fun.

Other Resort Guests Also Affected

It’s not just Fort Wilderness feeling the burn ban’s impact. Resorts across the property are being told to hold off on any activities that involve outdoor flames. That includes grilling stations, fire pits, and other features commonly found at Deluxe and Vacation Club resorts.

Even if your room has a grill area nearby, you’ll want to ask Cast Members before planning a cookout. Most likely, those spaces are off-limits until the weather shifts.

Disney is also cautioning guests to be mindful of other fire risks. Properly dispose of cigarettes, avoid parking on dry grass, and keep anything that could cause a spark well away from flammable areas.

What About Fireworks?

Naturally, people are wondering if fireworks and nighttime spectaculars are still a go.

At this time, they are. Shows at Magic Kingdom and EPCOT are expected to continue as scheduled—but that’s always subject to change. Strong winds can result in last-minute cancellations or modifications to protect both guests and cast members.

If you’re visiting and hoping to catch a nighttime show, be flexible. Check the My Disney Experience app throughout the day, and understand that Disney may adjust on the fly.

The Big Question: When Will It End?

Unfortunately, there’s no easy answer. The ban remains in place until the drought index stays below 500 for seven consecutive days. That means even one hot, windy afternoon can reset the clock.

It all depends on Mother Nature.

Until the county gives the all-clear, Disney will continue operating under the current restrictions. And while it may not be ideal, it’s all about keeping people and property safe—which is a core value for Disney’s operation.

In the meantime, Fort Wilderness is still offering its unique charm. You may not get to strike a match and build your own fire, but the spirit of the resort—nature, community, and a touch of nostalgia—is alive and well.

So hang in there, make the most of Disney’s hosted events, and save your personal campfire dreams for a future visit when the weather allows.

A frequent visitor of Walt Disney World Resort and Universal Orlando Resort, Andrew will likely be found freefalling on Twilight Zone Tower of Terror or enjoying Pirates of the Caribbean. Over at Universal, he'll be taking in the thrills of the Jurassic World Velocicoaster and Revenge of the Mummy
