Forget Doctor Doom: Next Major Avengers Villain Is Red Hulk

The Avengers are heading back to the big screen, but the road to Avengers: Doomsday (2026) has been anything but straightforward. Scheduled for release in December 2026, the film represents a turning point for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as the franchise retools its long-term narrative following a major creative shift.

The project was initially introduced as Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, positioned as a cornerstone of the Multiverse Saga. However, plans changed after Marvel abandoned its Kang-centric direction, leading to a complete reworking of the story. The new focus centers on Victor Von Doom, signaling a different approach to the saga’s overarching conflict.

Marvel made headlines at San Diego Comic-Con 2024 by confirming that Robert Downey Jr. would return to the MCU—but not as Tony Stark. Instead, the actor will portray Doctor Doom, raising immediate questions about how the character will be integrated. Whether this version of Doom has ties to Stark through alternate realities or exists independently remains unclear.

The film is expected to operate on a massive scale, similar to Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019), combining established MCU heroes with characters from previously separate Marvel franchises, including the X-Men. It’s a crossover that has been years in the making.

Anthony and Joe Russo are once again directing, with plans to continue the story in Avengers: Secret Wars, set for December 2027. Marvel has yet to release concrete plot details, but fan speculation is already building—particularly around the idea that Steve Rogers’ decision in Endgame may have triggered unintended consequences.

After returning the Infinity Stones, Steve chose to remain in the past with Peggy Carter. Some theories suggest that this act may have destabilized the timeline, potentially leading to the destruction of Doom’s world and fueling his motivations.

The cast reflects the film’s ambitious scope. A 2025 livestream reveal of the ensemble drew significant attention online, offering a glimpse at the scale Marvel is aiming for.

At the same time, Marvel Comics is launching its own large-scale storyline with “Avengers: Armageddon,” arriving in June 2026. Written by Chip Zdarsky with art by Frank Alpizar and Delio Diaz, the five-issue series builds on existing storylines while expanding into a global conflict centered on Latveria.

In the series, Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross takes control of the country as Red Hulk, creating a crisis that draws in the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, Wolverine, and other heroes.

Marvel’s official description states:

“ARMAGEDDON HAS ARRIVED!

Red Hulk’s devastating tear across the globe must be stopped…but it will take a colossal gathering of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes to do it! Calling in the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, Wolverine and more…but who will survive this super-powered cataclysm?! There will be a pre-Armageddon Marvel Universe and a post-Armageddon Marvel Universe. Be here to bear witness to the transformation.”

The emphasis on a divided Marvel Universe suggests long-term ramifications, potentially affecting multiple storylines and even connecting to the Ultimate Universe.

Zdarsky, however, has framed the project differently. “I don’t really consider it an event… I just wrote a story that I thought was big and cool and interesting… And then Marvel’s like, ‘Oh, wow. This is a cool event.’… so it feels like a big thing,” he said (via Bleeding Cool).

The debut issue, set for June 3, 2026, features a lineup that includes Wolverine, Sam Wilson/Captain America, Vision, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Invisible Woman, and Captain Marvel.

Artwork released ahead of the launch highlights a darker direction for Red Hulk. Variant covers from Kaare Andrews and Jerome Opeña showcase contrasting styles, while preview images suggest Ross is evolving into a more calculating and formidable figure, with visual cues reminiscent of the Maestro Hulk.

Marvel’s synopsis hints at significant consequences for the team: “When the Avengers assemble against [Red Hulk], explosive escalations will force them to unleash a power that changes how the world views their mightiest heroes forever,” the synopsis reads. “This pivotal chapter will lead directly into a new era of AVENGERS starting later this year.”

With “Avengers: Armageddon” arriving just ahead of Avengers: Doomsday, Marvel appears to be coordinating its storytelling across comics and film. The result could reshape both universes, setting up the next phase of the Avengers on page and screen.

Thomas Hitchen

When he’s not thinking about the Magic Kingdom, Thomas is usually reading a book, becoming desperately obsessed with fictional characters, or baking something delicious (his favorite is chocolate cake -- to bake and to eat). He's a dreamer and grew up on Mulan saving the world, Jim Hawkins soaring through the stars, and Padmé Amidala fighting a Nexu. At the Parks, he loves to ride Everest, stroll down Main Street with an overstuffed pin lanyard around his neck, and eat as many Mickey-shaped ice creams as possible. His favorite character is Han Solo (yes, he did shoot first), and his favorite TV show is Buffy the Vampire Slayer except when it's One Tree Hill. He loves sandy beach walks, forest hikes, and foodie days out in the Big City. Thomas lives in England, UK, with his fiancée, baby, and their dog, a Border Collie called Luna.
