Dollywood has long been praised for its warm atmosphere, sweeping views of the Smoky Mountains, and deep ties to the legacy of Dolly Parton. With hand-pulled taffy, cast-iron skillets sizzling with cinnamon bread, and local artisans blowing glass or carving wood on-site, the park delivers not just thrills but a true taste of Appalachian culture.
But a recent safety investigation is drawing new attention to the beloved Tennessee theme park – and the conditions behind the scenes.

Earlier this year, an employee working on the park’s Smoky Mountain River Rampage attraction sustained a serious injury while performing maintenance. The incident led to an investigation and renewed scrutiny of safety procedures at one of the South’s most iconic destinations.
While guests rarely see this side of theme park operations, the story behind the fine is more than a footnote in the park’s otherwise stellar reputation.
What Happened Behind the Scenes at River Rampage
According to a report from the Tennessee Occupational Safety and Health Administration (TOSHA), the incident occurred in March 2024. An employee was adjusting a belt on Smoky Mountain River Rampage when his jacket became caught in a coupling. The rotating machinery pulled in the sleeve, entangling his left arm. His injuries were serious enough that he had to be airlifted for immediate medical attention.

TOSHA investigators responded by opening a case into the safety conditions surrounding the incident. Their findings revealed two serious violations tied to the ride’s motor-driven boat lift. First, the pulleys involved were not properly guarded. Second, shaft couplings exposed employees to hazardous moving parts, including bolts and rotating surfaces. Workers were required to operate within a foot of these components.
The citations resulted in a $6,400 fine—$3,200 for each violation. Dollywood was given a deadline of June 30 to correct the issues. A spokesperson for the park later confirmed to local station 6 News that “the incident has been settled.”
Smoky Mountain River Rampage, built by coaster manufacturer Intamin, is a long-standing favorite during warmer months. It sends guests on a turbulent six-person rafting adventure, where unpredictable splashes are part of the fun. But the ride’s internal mechanics, typically hidden from public view, are now part of a much more serious conversation.

Dollywood's Track Record and What Comes Next
Dollywood’s charm lies in its mix of down-home nostalgia and modern thrill rides. Since it opened in 1986, the park has grown into one of the most celebrated regional parks in the U.S., often praised for its cleanliness, entertainment offerings, and its namesake’s personal touch. From coasters like Lightning Rod and Wild Eagle to its iconic cinnamon bread, smoked meats, and old-fashioned craft demos, the park offers something uniquely rooted in East Tennessee tradition.
Yet, the park has faced a number of operational challenges over the years. In July 2020, a chain decoration fell in Wilderness Pass, injuring three guests near the Mystery Mine coaster.
One day later, a craftsman working inside the Mountain Blown Glass Shop was injured on the job. In 2023 and 2024, the park contended with a water main break and a flash flood that left parts of the property submerged and guests navigating waist-deep water.

Despite these incidents, Dollywood continues to invest heavily in its future. Its next attraction, Hidden Hollow Aviation, is slated to open in 2026. Touted as the park’s largest and most expensive to date, the five-story indoor experience will explore the wonder of nighttime in the Smokies—a theme close to Dolly Parton’s heart.
The park’s future looks bright, but recent events serve as a reminder: even the most beloved destinations must balance magic with maintenance. As Dollywood expands, the pressure to keep guests and employees safe grows along with it.
Have you visited Dollywood lately?

Why was the jacket not properly contained where it wouldn’t be loose getting into dangerous machinery ..
