2026's Avengers: Doomsday could redefine Marvel’s timeline as Multiverse stakes escalate.

Marvel Studios may be preparing one of its most complex narratives yet with Avengers: Doomsday. Reports circulating over the past year suggest the film will center on Multiversal “incursions,” events where parallel realities collide with devastating consequences.
Though the idea has surfaced in previous MCU projects, Doomsday is expected to explore it on a much larger scale. Rather than following a single group of heroes, the film brings together characters from across Marvel’s expanding Multiverse, including the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and the X-Men.
Among the most surprising elements is the return of Steve Rogers (Chris Evans). After Avengers: Endgame (2019) seemingly closed his chapter—with the character choosing to remain in the past—Rogers is now expected to reenter the story in a significant way. This time, he’s said to be navigating the Multiverse itself and stepping back into a leadership role following the arrival of Doctor Doom, portrayed by Robert Downey Jr.
The development aligns with previous comments from the Russo Brothers, who have indicated that Steve Rogers continues to hold narrative importance within the MCU. His return could provide a sense of continuity as the franchise moves into increasingly complex territory.

Thor is also expected to remain at the center of the action. Chris Hemsworth’s long-running character reportedly plays a major role in confronting the Multiversal crisis, working alongside Rogers as the story unfolds. Rather than fading into the background, Thor is said to actively travel between universes, facing the growing threat head-on.
Early footage from the film appears to reinforce this, with scenes reportedly showing Thor battling Doctor Doom using Stormbreaker. The character’s continued prominence suggests Marvel is not ready to move on from the God of Thunder just yet.
The film’s central storyline reportedly involves Earth’s Mightiest Heroes confronting Doom after the onset of Multiversal incursions.
However, the crossover nature of the story may lead to internal conflicts. Reports point to a clash between Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, as well as a confirmed confrontation between Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova and Rebecca Romijn’s Mystique.

These encounters hint that not every meeting between heroes and newcomers will be cooperative, adding another layer of tension to the already high-stakes narrative.
Beyond its immediate plot, Avengers: Doomsday may have lasting consequences for the MCU’s timeline. A post from Hollywood Handle on X (formerly Twitter) shared remarks from Kevin Feige at CinemaCon that have sparked widespread discussion:

“This film takes place where ‘Endgame’ left off but also goes back to when it all started with ‘X-Men.’”

The statement suggests a narrative that bridges multiple eras of Marvel storytelling, potentially reshaping how those stories connect. With the Multiverse playing a central role, questions are mounting about whether recent events will remain unchanged or be reworked.
At this stage, Marvel has not provided definitive answers, leaving fans to speculate about how the film fits into the broader continuity. This new information also relates to comments and reports made last year. In a 2025 interview, Kevin Feige addressed the studio’s long-term strategy, particularly in relation to the X-Men.
“Reboot is a scary word,” Feige told Variety. “Reboot can mean a lot of things to a lot of people. Reset, singular timeline — we’re thinking along those lines. ‘X-Men’ is where that will happen next.”

“It’ll just be a quick scrub of details the MCU wants to sort of forget and redo,” Perez outlined. “This will involve the resurrection of some heroes and villains as well as the erasure of some minor events that bother fans (and Kevin Feige), but all in all, it will be like 75-80% the original timeline, with some minor changes.”
Rather than functioning as a standalone installment, Avengers: Doomsday appears to be part of a larger plan.
The film is expected to lead directly into Avengers: Secret Wars (2027), serving a similar role to Avengers: Infinity War (2018) in the lead-up to Endgame. Together, the two films are anticipated to form a concluding arc for the Multiverse Saga.
If reports hold true, Doomsday will not only resolve ongoing storylines but also establish the foundation for what comes next in the MCU.

As always with Marvel, rumors and leaks should be taken with a degree of skepticism. Not every reported detail makes it to the final cut, and plans can evolve during production.
Even so, the scale of what’s being described—particularly the inclusion of legacy characters and the focus on Multiversal storytelling—indicates that Avengers: Doomsday is aiming for something expansive. Whether it ultimately meets expectations or alters the direction of the MCU remains to be seen, but it’s already shaping up to be one of the franchise’s most closely watched projects.
