It’s no secret that Pixar Animation Studio has been struggling for quite some time. All film studios were hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic, but Pixar appears to be having a more challenging time than most. Pixar changed the movie game in 1995 when it released the iconic film, Toy Story. It then became known as a studio that couldn’t fail, with other uber-successful films like Toy Story 2, WALL-E, Up, Cars, Finding Nemo, Monsters, Inc., and Coco. However, its last big moneymaker was all the way back in 2018, with Incredibles 2.
The sad part is that Pixar’s failures aren’t strictly because they are making bad movies. While there have been ups and downs, recent movies like Luca, Turning Red, and Elemental have all been loved by fans. Luca and Turning Red were both released during the pandemic, so big monetary success was not expected. Elemental, on the other hand, was a big financial hit to the studio, as it was expected to do well.
Despite it being loved by fans who saw it in theaters, Elemental has only grossed about $65 million at the domestic box office. However, it should be noted, that it is the most successful Pixar film since before the pandemic.
The new movie may not be a financial success in the U.S., but there is one country that just can’t get enough of the citizens of Element City. That country is South Korea.
According to a new article from MBC, a large South Korean news outlet, Elemental is the most successful Pixar movie ever released in the country.
The animation ‘Elemental’ has achieved the highest domestic sales among Pixar films ever released.
As of yesterday, Elemental exceeded the record of the popular animation ‘Inside Out’, which was released in 2015, with cumulative sales exceeding KRW 42.4 billion.
Since its release on the 14th of last month, it has been causing a sensation by riding on word of mouth.
Last weekend, the cumulative number of viewers exceeded 4 million.
Elemental is evaluated to have drawn the sympathy of the domestic audience by melting the emotions of Koreans well.
The article states that Elemental’s box office sales in South Korea have surpassed $42.4 billion South Korean Won. That equates to just under $33 million U.S. In fact, Elemental box office sales in South Korea have accounted for nearly half of all the film’s box office sales overseas.
The Twitter account Disney Animation Promos also shared that “Steal the Show” — one of the film’s original songs — is one of the most streamed songs in South Korea.
Additionally, “Steal the Show” is currently one of the most streamed songs in South Korea (#10 on Spotify, #4 on Apple Music.) 👀

Elemental may not be Pixar’s most successful movie, but fans have fallen in love with the story. It tells the story of Ember (a fire element) and Wade (a water element) who both live in Element City. The different elements that live in the city — air, fire, water, and land — do not interact with each other. But Wade and Ember must team up in order to save everyone.
Disney has not yet said when Elemental will come to Disney+, but it is being speculated that it should be released on the streamer sometime around September 2023.
