When Disney California Adventure Park debuted at Disneyland Resort in 2001, it aimed to whisk guests back to California’s Golden Age, celebrating the glamour of Hollywood, the nostalgic charm of the boardwalk, thrilling rides, and tempting culinary delights. However, despite its efforts, the park struggled to capture the same iconic Disney magic that visitors had come to expect.
Since its opening, DCA has undergone a series of major transformations to enhance its appeal. Notably, in 2018, Paradise Pier was reimagined as Pixar Pier, and in 2021, Bug’s Land was replaced by the action-packed Avengers Campus.

A Ride Through California’s Past
The Red Car Trolley has been a beloved feature of DCA since its debut. Modeled after the historic Pacific Electric Red Cars that once traversed Southern California, the trolley perfectly captured the essence of Buena Vista Street and Hollywood Land. Its cheerful bell and nostalgic charm gave guests a delightful way to explore the park while paying homage to California’s storied past.
Running from Buena Vista Street to the edge of Avengers Campus, the trolley wasn’t just a mode of transportation—it was a piece of immersive storytelling. Guests could ride past vintage-inspired storefronts and see characters like Mickey and the Newsies perform in live, interactive shows that highlighted Disney’s take on 1920s Los Angeles.

Over the years, as DCA underwent several transformations—including the reimagining of Paradise Pier as Pixar Pier and Bug’s Land into Avengers Campus—the Red Car Trolley remained one of the park’s most authentic and enduring attractions. However, it appears that even this cherished piece of history is not immune to change.
Avengers Campus: The Next Phase
Earlier this year, Disney announced ambitious plans to expand Avengers Campus. This upcoming addition will introduce two major attractions: Stark’s Flight Lab, a thrilling experience where guests will collaborate with Tony Stark, and Avengers Infinity Defense, an E-ticket ride that will pit fans against Thanos in an epic battle. Alongside these rides, the expansion will also include new dining options and shopping experiences.
While this new phase promises excitement for Marvel fans, the construction will require significant space and time.
To accommodate the work, the Red Car Trolley will temporarily cease operations starting February 9, 2025. Disney has assured fans that the trolley will return, but no official reopening date has been announced. This uncertainty has left many guests wondering if the trolley’s return is truly guaranteed.
The Future of the Red Car Trolley
Once it closes on February 9, the Red Car Trolley will still be visible at Buena Vista Street, where it will serve as a static photo op. Guests will be able to step aboard, snap pictures, and perhaps even spot Disney characters using it as a backdrop for meet-and-greets. However, without its signature journey through the park, a piece of the trolley’s magic feels temporarily lost.
Disney’s decision to leave the trolley on display rather than remove it entirely is a nod to its enduring popularity. But with construction on Avengers Campus expected to last until 2026, fans are bracing for the possibility that the trolley may never return to its original route.
Balancing Progress and Nostalgia
The expansion of Avengers Campus marks an exciting chapter for DCA, promising to draw in Marvel fans with cutting-edge attractions. At the same time, the potential loss of the Red Car Trolley highlights the delicate balance Disney must strike between innovation and preserving its legacy.
For longtime fans, the Red Car Trolley isn’t just a ride; it’s a symbol of DCA’s original vision. Its closure represents the evolving identity of the park, which continues to embrace new intellectual properties while paying homage to its roots. Whether the trolley returns in full or remains a stationary relic, its impact on Disney California Adventure’s story will never be forgotten.

I will miss the Red Car Trolley when it closes on February 8, 2025. Since Disney California Adventure is going to start construction for the Avengers Campus expansion and the Red Car Barn will be removed would be the reason why the Red Car Trolley will close on February 8, 2025 and I do expect and hope that the Avatar Land will go on the Simba Parking Lot rather than the Hollywood Backlot, then I would expect and hope for the Red Car Trolley at Disney California Adventure to return in the future or near future.
