Universal Orlando Resort is gearing up for a massive milestone on May 22, 2025, with the grand opening of Epic Universe, the fourth park in its ever-expanding lineup. Boasting five immersive lands—including The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic, SUPER NINTENDO WORLD, How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk, Celestial Park, and Dark Universe—this ambitious new project is set to redefine theme park experiences.
But despite the excitement surrounding Universal’s latest expansion, Disney remains publicly unfazed.

Disney’s Stance on Epic Universe
During Disney’s February 5 earnings call, Disney CFO Hugh Johnston was asked directly about the potential impact of Epic Universe on Walt Disney World. Rather than addressing the new park by name, Johnston stated that its opening would have only a “small impact” on Disney’s theme park attendance.
“As we built our plans, we anticipated some small impact for Epic Universe opening, and we effectively hedged in the guidance we provided,” Johnston remarked.

This response signals a shift from Disney’s previous tone. In prior statements, Disney projected a 6% to 8% boost in attendance during the timeframe of Epic Universe’s debut, citing historical trends that suggested major theme park openings benefited the entire Orlando tourism industry.
Is Disney Underestimating the Competition?
While Disney appears confident, fans are less convinced. Many have pointed out that in recent years, Disney has hiked prices, cut back on guest perks, and scaled-down park experiences, leading to growing dissatisfaction.
Meanwhile, Universal is leaning into innovation and guest immersion with cutting-edge attractions, thrilling ride technology, and expansions that directly challenge Disney’s dominance.

Epic Universe isn’t just another theme park; it’s a potential game-changer in the Orlando tourism industry. The debut of SUPER NINTENDO WORLD alone has sparked massive buzz, while The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic is expected to draw huge crowds.
Add in never-before-seen attractions and brand-new resort hotels, and Universal is making a bold statement about its place in the theme park hierarchy.
Disney’s Next Move
Even though Disney is downplaying the threat, they aren’t sitting idle. One of their most exciting announcements is the long-awaited Villain-themed land at Magic Kingdom. While details remain scarce, this expansion could help rekindle fan excitement and bring fresh competition to Universal’s major moves.

However, some fans believe that more aggressive action is needed to maintain Disney’s stronghold. Universal’s full-court press with Epic Universe signals an Orlando theme park rivalry like never before—and only time will tell whether Disney is making the right call by playing it cool.
