Get ready to dive back into the ocean, because on November 27, one day before Thanksgiving, Disney’s Moana 2 is set to make waves in theaters worldwide. With beloved characters returning and a thrilling new storyline, Disney has high hopes for this anticipated sequel, which promises an adventure that both Moana fans and newcomers alike won’t want to miss.
In this new journey, Auli’i Cravalho reprises her role as Moana, the spirited Polynesian princess, alongside Dwayne Johnson as the demigod Maui. Set three years after the original film, Moana faces a mysterious calling from her ancestors, leading her on a daring journey across the far reaches of Oceania.

Although Moana 2 was originally conceived as a Disney+ series, the project evolved into a full-scale film after Disney’s Bob Iger recognized the potential of its storyline, reworking it into the cinematic release we’re about to see.
Excitement for Moana 2 extends beyond Disney’s studios. AMC Theatres CEO Adam Aron shared his predictions during AMC’s Q3 earnings call, noting that the sequel could be a major holiday box office hit.
According to Aron, the holiday season already includes blockbuster contenders, with Wicked arriving on November 22 and Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King scheduled for December 20.
Despite the competition, Aron believes that Moana 2 has a strong chance to outshine even some of the biggest releases this year.
Deadline reported on Aron’s excitement, even revealing that he thinks Moana 2 could surpass the success of Disney and Pixar’s Inside Out 2, which came out in June:
“Some people in the know are telling me that Moana 2 could eclipse and outshine even the success of Inside Out 2,” he beamed. By the way, Inside Out 2 is the highest-grossing movie YTD stateside with $652.9M. The Pixar sequel opened to $154.2M, the second-highest opening of the year behind Disney’s own Deadpool & Wolverine from Marvel Studios ($211.4M).
Recent six-week-in-advance projections from tracking service Quorum put Moana 2 at $100 million-plus during the five-day Thanksgiving Wednesday-Sunday frame and $75M-$82M over Friday-Sunday. The first Moana in 2016 opened to $82M over five days, ultimately grossing $248.7M stateside.
