Customers were incredibly frustrated with South African provider DStv for charging them for a Disney+ subscription they did not opt for.
Oftentimes, the Walt Disney Company has come under fire for its costs and pricing when it comes to its theme parks and any Disney streaming service like Disney+, Hulu, or ESPN. However, a recent story from South Africa has Disney on the fringes of this story and paints a sad picture of the operations of a South African service provider.
DStv Bills Customers for Disney+… That They Didn’t Ask For
Per the latest reports from News24, DStv has erroneously charged customers for a Disney+ subscription that many did not actually sign up for. Through a partnership with the Walt Disney Company, the MultiChoice-owned service allows local DStv subscribers to add a Disney+ subscription to their monthly bills.
DStv offers these for Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, BritBox, and its own Showmax as well. However, of note is that these are optional, additional services and are meant to be opted into. However, many local DStv subscribers reported being victims of incorrect charging, with DStv proving difficult to work with to rectify the situation.

One customer shared, “I have been a victim. I remember I called the Call Centre of DSTV and the Agent told me that I am the one who activated Disney+ on my account and that was a lie. DSTV activates Disney+ without our consent. Unethical behavior altogether.”
Another agreed, “I thought I was the only one. I had to call them, and they couldn’t explain why Disney+ was added to my account.”
A third felt Disney needed to be held responsible as well. “this is blatant fraud and @disneyplusza @Disney is complacent in it.”
DStv charging customers for Disney+ without permission
MultiChoice previously came under fire for automatically signing up its customers to limited-period free Disney+ subscriptions. This time, it actually charged people without permission.https://t.co/6Qgu8WwrZX— MyBroadband (@mybroadband) January 3, 2024
As of the publishing of this article, neither Disney nor DStv hasn’t yet addressed the situation outside of reportedly working to reverse charges for customers in South Africa.
