We’re hearing reports from Twitter user @scottgustin that Disney’s new Genie+ mobile app will come with AR filters so that Guests taking selfies in front of Cinderella Castle can recreate the birthday cake castle photos from 1996.
The birthday cake look for Cinderella Castle ran 18 months from 1996-98 to celebrate the 25 anniversary of the Walt Disney World Resort, with fans being fairly divided over whether or not they actually liked the look for the Magic Kingdom’s park icon. Ultimately some fans were just never pleased with this Castle redesign, while others have a nostalgia for it but could see why someone may not like it if Cinderella Castle looked like a pink birthday cake for their first visit to the Magic Kingdom.
Disney has yet to share any details of AR photo editors in Genie+, but we will update as soon as we hear more. So far, we know Genie+ will totally revolutionize the way that Guests plan their Walt Disney World vacation and wait in line. Many suggestions on Genie+ for things to do will be customized for each Guest, and Guests will have the option of purchasing Lightning Lane access, which will essentially operate as a paid FastPass service giving Guests the option to purchase an individual pass for select attractions.
Genie+ will also include many of the capabilities currently seen in My Disney Experience, and it will operate with the newly announced MagicBand+. MagicBand+ is Disney’s newly enhanced MagicBand set to debut in 2022 that will take all of the original features such as retail purchases, park entry, resort hotel entry, PhotoPass collection, and more, and add to the lineup interactive activities in Walt Disney World theme parks and light packages based on nightly spectaculars.
While we wait for confirmation and additional details from Disney on the possibility of Castle cake selfies, we will keep the Walt Disney World 50th anniversary news coming, and hope to have some more updates on the rollout of Genie+ soon!
