In just over a month, Disney fans can board a virtual Doom Buggie and ride on the other side when Haunted Mansion spooks theaters. The devil is in the details, and the spirits from the iconic Haunted Mansion attraction are etched into every corner of the highly-anticipated film.
Directed by Justin Simien and featuring fan-favorite stars like Jamie Lee Curtis, LaKeith Stanfield, Owen Wilson, Rosario Dawson, Danny DeVito, Tiffany Haddisn, and Jared Leto, Haunted Mansion busts the doors open on Disney’s favorite haunts.
While not technically a live-action remake, Haunted Mansion isn’t the first go at an attraction-themed feature film. Eddie Murphy fronted The Haunted Mansion in 2003, considered a certified flop by fans. But with cameos from Madame Leota (Jamie Lee Curtis) and the Hat-Box Ghost (Jared Leto), Disney enthusiasts can collect a basket of Easter eggs throughout the film.
A Peek Behind the Spooky Scenes
In a film produced by Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich with a screenplay written by Katie Dippold from “Parks and Recreation,” Haunted Mansion promises to combine hair-raising frights with knee-slapping laughs. With comedic actors portraying the motley crew dispelling Gabbie’s (Rosario Dawson) home of happy haunts, the quips will be just as present as the spirits.

In the sneak peek, director Justin Simien emphasized how the film stays true to the symbolic attraction, saying:
I wanted everything to feel as if it came right off of the ride.
To answer the call from Disney purists hoping for more classic Disney and tradition to enter its films, Simien reassured fans with his mission for the film, adding:
What we wanted to do is preserve the details that fans remembered and expand the universe around them.
Designing a plot around a centuries-old mansion with rich, haunted history for the cast to discover allowed the cast and crew to impart the richness of Disney’s iconic ride into the film. With meticulous details that Disney fans love to uncover, Haunted Mansion is primed to delight all the foolish mortals who watch it in theaters on July 28.
