Hersheypark Drowning Leaves Community Devastated

It was a warm July evening in Hershey, Pennsylvania—the kind of night made for barefoot steps on hot pavement, dripping ice cream cones, and splashes of water echoing across a family-friendly paradise. But as twilight settled over Hersheypark’s water attraction, The Boardwalk, the mood shifted. Something was wrong. Something irreversible.

By the end of the night, a child was gone.

On July 24, 2025, a nine-year-old boy drowned while visiting the park with his family. Despite immediate action from lifeguards, on-site medical teams, and emergency responders, the young guest could not be revived after being transported to Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.

A day that should have ended with sticky fingers and tired giggles instead ended in silence. And now, a question hangs in the humid summer air: How does something like this happen at a place meant to feel so safe?

A Public Statement and a Private Grief

John Lawn, CEO of Hershey Entertainment & Resorts Company, released an official statement just hours later:

“From the moment our lifeguard team recognized that a child was in distress, they performed an immediate rescue, followed by continuous, coordinated life-saving efforts… Despite everyone’s tireless efforts, the child did not recover.”

“Our hearts break for this child and the child’s family.”

No identifying details have been shared, and the family has asked for privacy. The park has since confirmed that an internal investigation is underway and that it is cooperating with local authorities.

Echoes of Sorrow Across a Theme Park Legacy

For generations, Hersheypark has represented more than roller coasters and cotton candy—it’s been a staple of childhood for millions in the Northeast and beyond. So when tragedy strikes in a space built for innocence, it hits differently.

People aren't just grieving the loss of a young boy they never knew. They're mourning the breach of a space that’s long been trusted as safe, sacred, and sweet.

On social media, the reaction has been swift and somber:

“My stomach dropped when I read the news. We were just there last week.”

“I’ve been going to Hersheypark since I was a kid. This doesn’t feel real.”

“I used to work there. This will haunt the staff forever.”

This isn’t just a local tragedy. It’s a wound that cuts across states, into the hearts of parents, employees, and families who see pieces of their own lives in this story.

A Painful Reminder of Fragility

To be clear: no theme park, no matter how seasoned or well-reviewed, is immune to tragedy. Water attractions in particular carry complex risks—ones that require absolute vigilance, seamless training, and a constant balance between crowd control and individualized safety.

Hersheypark, by all past reports, is known for its diligence. But now, the pressure will mount—not only to explain what happened, but to prove how it will never happen again.

This moment demands more than reflection. It demands action, and transparency. Because at the core of every amusement park lies an unspoken promise: That families can leave their worries at the gate, if only for a day.

And when that promise is broken, something deeper than policy must be restored.

The Unseen Ripples as Hersheypark Reels Back From This Tragedy

The boy’s family now lives with the kind of loss no words can fix. Hersheypark’s employees—especially those on the front lines that day—now carry invisible weight. And guests, near and far, will walk through the gates with a little less naivety.

But if there’s anything to be learned from this pain, perhaps it’s this: The places we cherish most are also the ones we must protect most fiercely. Because joy is fragile. And when it breaks, the silence is deafening.

Since first stepping inside the Magic Kingdom at nine years old, I knew I was destined to be a theme Park enthusiast. Although I consider myself a theme Park junkie, I still have much to learn and discover about Disney. Universal Orlando Resort has my heart; being an Annual Passholder means visiting my favorite places on Earth when possible! When I’m not writing about Disney, Universal, or entertainment news, you’ll find me cruising on my motorcycle, hiking throughout my local metro parks, or spending quality time with my girlfriend, family, or friends.
