Historic California Theme Park Calls It Quits Months Before 70-Year Celebration

California’s theme park scene has always been larger than life, with giants like Disneyland, Knott’s Berry Farm, and Six Flags Magic Mountain. But tucked away in Fresno’s Roeding Park, Playland carved out its own slice of magic. For nearly 70 years, it stood as a quiet, beloved destination for families seeking simple, old-fashioned fun. Now, that era is coming to an end.

Playland has announced it will permanently close on March 30. The park, which opened just six weeks before Disneyland in 1955, has faced years of struggles, culminating in this final decision to shut its gates for good.

Theme Park Struggles to Stay Afloat

Playland’s decline didn’t happen overnight. A significant number of its rides were forced to close in 2000 when California tightened its amusement park safety regulations.

Despite its sister park, Funland, reportedly faring better, Playland has been “hanging on” in recent times, according to Susan Anderson, a board member for Playland and Storyland, who spoke to SF Gate.

Helm and Sons, the company responsible for operating the park’s rides, ended their contract in February, further accelerating Playland’s collapse. The park was temporarily shut down in 2015 for modernization efforts, then again during the COVID-19 pandemic, taking longer to reopen than most theme parks due to the close proximity between guests and staff on rides.

Back in 2024, Playland announced its permanent closure, only to be saved by a last-minute deal with neighboring Storyland. But this time, with no rescue plan in sight, it appears Playland’s run is truly over.

Disneyland Gears Up for 70th Anniversary

As Playland prepares to close, Disneyland is ramping up for a major celebration. The Anaheim park, opened by Walt Disney in July 1955, remains the crown jewel of California’s theme park scene and will mark its 70th anniversary with a series of special events and entertainment starting in May.

Among the highlights: the return of fan-favorite nighttime shows Paint the Night and Wondrous Journeys, a brand-new Celebrate Happy Cavalcade featuring rare characters like Duffy and ShellieMay, and the debut of Walt Disney – A Magical Life. The new show will showcase an animatronic version of Walt Disney himself, rotating in the Opera House with The Disneyland Story presenting Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln beginning in July.

The contrast couldn’t be starker—while Disneyland looks ahead to a milestone year packed with festivities, Playland prepares for a quiet farewell. For those who grew up visiting Playland’s humble attractions, the closure marks the end of an era.
