In 2045, Disney World Will Be Blacked Out–But How Much Will Tickets Cost?

Two decades from now, a rare astronomical event will take center stage over Walt Disney World Resort. On August 12, 2045, a total solar eclipse will sweep across Central Florida, placing the entire resort in darkness for six minutes.

The path of totality, as reported by Fox 13 Seattle in 2024, will stretch across numerous major cities: Reno, Salt Lake City, Colorado Springs, Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Tampa, Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Nassau, Santo Domingo, Belém, São Luís, and Recife. The team at National Eclipse (@NationalEclipse) shared the projected route on X (formerly Twitter), asking with a wink, “What will a ticket to @WaltDisneyWorld cost on August 12, 2045, when a six-minute total solar eclipse crosses directly over the park?”

In Florida, the duration will vary by location, according to Click Orlando’s 2025 update:

  • Kissimmee, Celebration, Poinciana, Groveland, Clermont: Greater than 6 minutes
  • Orlando, Apopka, The Villages: Nearly 6 minutes
  • Ocala: Approximately 5 minutes 40 seconds
  • Titusville: Approximately 4 minutes 30 seconds
  • Daytona Beach: Approximately 2 minutes 30 seconds

NASA explains that a total solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, completely blocking the Sun’s face and creating the effect of dawn or dusk. A similar occurrence in April 2024 crossed Mexico, the United States, and Canada. That spring, Walt Disney World experienced record Spring Break travel, with Orlando International Airport welcoming 7.6 million visitors—resulting in longer waits, limited availability, and increased Lightning Lane costs.

Beyond the celestial spectacle, the coming years promise extensive growth at the resort. CEO Bob Iger has announced that Disney Experiences will invest $60 billion over a decade, with half dedicated to theme parks and resorts. Projects already in motion include Fantasy Springs at Tokyo DisneySea, World of Frozen at Disneyland Paris, and new attractions inspired by Encanto, Cars, and Indiana Jones at Walt Disney World. At Disneyland Resort, Avengers Campus will see its footprint doubled alongside other enhancements.

These developments accompany steady rises in ticket, dining, merchandise, and lodging prices. Even so, attendance remains high, and Lightning Lane offerings continue to sell out regularly.

When August 12, 2045, arrives, Walt Disney World Resort will stand at the intersection of a rare cosmic event and a transformed guest experience—two milestones set to define an era in the park’s history.

When he’s not thinking about the Magic Kingdom, Thomas is usually reading a book, becoming desperately obsessed with fictional characters, or baking something delicious (his favorite is chocolate cake -- to bake and to eat). He's a dreamer and grew up on Mulan saving the world, Jim Hawkins soaring through the stars, and Padmé Amidala fighting a Nexu. At the Parks, he loves to ride Everest, stroll down Main Street with an overstuffed pin lanyard around his neck, and eat as many Mickey-shaped ice creams as possible. His favorite character is Han Solo (yes, he did shoot first), and his favorite TV show is Buffy the Vampire Slayer except when it's One Tree Hill. He loves sandy beach walks, forest hikes, and foodie days out in the Big City. Thomas lives in England, UK, with his fiancée, baby, and their dog, a Border Collie called Luna.
