Magic Kingdom’s Tomorrowland has always been about looking toward the future.
From its sleek design to its lineup of attractions, it represents Disney’s ever-changing vision of what’s to come. While some experiences, like TRON Lightcycle / Run, embrace cutting-edge technology, others, like Tomorrowland Speedway, offer a nostalgic look at how people once imagined the future of transportation.
Tomorrowland Speedway has been a staple of Magic Kingdom since opening day in 1971, giving guests the chance to take the wheel of a gas-powered go-kart and cruise around a track designed to mimic real-life racing circuits. Though it’s not the most futuristic ride in the land, it remains a popular stop for families.
For the past few years, Disney has offered an additional experience to complement the attraction—personalized Tomorrowland Speedway driver’s licenses. These souvenir kiosks allowed guests to pose for a photo and receive a printed license, making the experience feel even more official. However, due to a recent power failure, these kiosks are now indefinitely unavailable.
The Issue Behind the Shutdown
According to Cast Members, the driver’s license kiosks, located near the stroller parking area, were taken offline due to a backstage power outage affecting their system. The kiosks allowed guests to follow on-screen prompts to take a photo, adjust the camera positioning, and receive a printed hard plastic license. The digital version was linked to the guest’s My Disney Experience account.
While the kiosks were never a major attraction, they added an extra bit of fun to the Tomorrowland Speedway experience, particularly for younger guests. The disruption has left some guests disappointed, and Cast Members are currently unable to provide an estimated timeframe for when—or if—the service will be restored.
What This Could Mean for the Future of Tomorrowland Speedway
Though this outage may seem minor, it does highlight a larger issue within Tomorrowland. The land has long been in need of updates, and Tomorrowland Speedway is frequently mentioned as an attraction that could benefit from modernization. Many Disney fans have called for the ride to transition to electric cars to better align with the land’s futuristic theme, but no plans for such a change have been announced.
With Disney constantly evaluating its offerings, there’s always a possibility that experiences like the driver’s license kiosks won’t return. While some guests may not notice their absence, it does remove a bit of the interactive fun that made the attraction feel more engaging.
As of now, the main ride remains operational, and the power failure appears to be limited to the kiosks. Whether they’ll return or quietly disappear remains to be seen.
