It is well established that Lucasfilm’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny has had a lackluster showing at the global box office during its theatrical run. However, the title recently claimed a victory after launching for video-on-demand (VOD) digital release download and rental on August 29.

Indiana Jones 5′s Box Office Flop

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny was supposed to be a surefire hit for the Walt Disney Company. The title was the first movie in the franchise to be launched under the Disney brand after the entertainment giant purchased Lucasfilm in October 2012. Disney relied heavily on fan nostalgia and the reliability of Indiana Jones movies to anticipate a worthwhile box office success.

The company was so sure of this expectation that it let the budget of the film stretch way out of control. Analysts speculate that the film’s total budget far exceeded $220 million, making it one of the costliest blockbusters ever to be created. However, the movie went on to only earn $370 million worldwide, labeling it a disaster by everyone covering it. Previous films in the franchise, including Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and Raiders of the Lost Ark, all performed well for Lucasfilm under the direction of Steven Spielberg and George Lucas.

Indiana Jones VOD Success

Nevertheless, Disney made the decision to bring the title to video-on-demand purchase and rental last week on August 29. The movie launched on VOD the same week as three other anticipated titles: Paramount’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, Universal’s The Last Voyage of the Demeter horror film, and 20th Century Studios’ The Boogeyman. Between the four released titles last week, one stood out on top across all VOD platforms.

According to IndieWire, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny took the number one spot on all VOD charts across the board. The title was the most successful movie on iTunes, Google Play, and Vudu. Consumers can download the HD version of Indiana Jones 5 for $19.99, against titles like The Last Voyage of the Demeter standing at $24.99. IndieWire speculates that the movie found this success due to the holiday weekend release. It was the only title to make all three charts.

One Last Adventure

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is the last outing for Harrison Ford as the iconic character. While the film starts with a de-aged Ford, the journey mostly occurs with an older Jones in 1969. Indiana Jones teams up with his estranged goddaughter, Helena Shaw (played by Phoebe Waller-Bridge), to keep a relic from getting into the hands of a Nazi scientist bent on rewriting World War II’s ending. Returning actors include Karen Allen and John Rhys-Davies, with newcomers Antonio Banderas and Mads Mikkelson.

The film’s financial failure at the box office can also be attributed to its insane budget, hiked up from COVID-19 filming protocols and delays. While this VOD success is nice for Disney, it remains to be seen whether it will continue this performance enough to garner any relevant profits for Lucasfilm. Disney also has yet to announce a release date for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny coming to its Disney+ streaming platform.
