It’s Official: Disney Won’t Be Moving Forward With Fan-Favorite Franchise

Disney fans know that not every planned sequel makes it across the finish line, but this latest update still stings for those who were hoping for a return to one of the studio’s most charming modern adventures. Disney and Dwayne Johnson have enjoyed a strong creative partnership for years, making this announcement feel especially unexpected.

For some time, rumors had circulated that the studio was re‑evaluating certain projects after a major leadership shift. Johnson hinted that conversations were happening behind the scenes, but until recently, nothing concrete had been shared with fans. Now the decision is final: a major Johnson‑led Disney franchise will not continue.

The franchise in question is Jungle Cruise, and Disney has officially stepped away from developing a second film. The original 2021 movie combined humor, adventure, and a beloved theme park attraction, gaining attention during a complicated theatrical era when movies were debuting both in theaters and on streaming platforms.

Johnson recently explained that the sequel’s cancellation comes down to shifting priorities inside Disney. The studio reassessed its slate after the pandemic and felt that returning to this particular property wasn’t the right move. He shared that Disney “did it once” and was unsure about revisiting it in the current entertainment environment. Emily Blunt supported the decision, noting that the studio simply chose not to “set sail again.”

This marks the end of what once looked like a sure‑thing franchise. A follow‑up was reported to be in early development back in 2021, with Johnson, Blunt, and director Jaume Collet‑Serra expected to return. Even throughout 2024, both stars continued to express enthusiasm, fueling hope that the project was still alive.

But in an era where studios must be more selective than ever, Disney is tightening its focus around its largest brands and blockbuster‑driven projects. While Jungle Cruise was successful for its time, it didn’t quite ignite into the multi‑film franchise Disney may have hoped for.

The good news? Johnson isn’t going anywhere. He remains tied to several major Disney initiatives, including the live‑action reimagining of Moana, which continues to draw excitement from longtime fans. So even though this particular adventure has reached its final destination, the partnership between Johnson and Disney is far from over.
