Innocently tucked beneath the Tree of Life in Disney’s Animal Kingdom is an unassuming attraction. With air conditioning, ample shade, and intricate animal carvings along the queue, Guests are drawn to it like ants to a picnic.
While a shaded, seated show sounds ideal for a scorching day at Animal Kingdom, kids’ reactions to the 3-D and 4-D experience: It’s Tough to be a Bug might make you second-guess your Park-day choices.

The truth is, this show can be terrifying—even for adults. With animatronic ants from the Disney film A Bug’s Life welcoming the crowd into the underground theater, it’s hard to imagine how things can take a frightening turn. But as the evil Hopper takes the reigns, chaos ensues, introducing wasp stings to the back of your seat and stink bug gas dispersing through the crowd.
All the creepy, crawling effects come as bug-sized surprises along the way. In a hilarious TikTok from @danielle.laurenn with over 30,000 views, she captured the pandemonium perfectly with her Animal Kingdom anniversary post.
@magicallydanielle Its really not great for kids😂😅 ANYWAYSSSS… happy birthday animal kingdom!!!🌳🧡 #disney #disneyworld #disneyadults #itstoughtobeabug #animalkingdom #wdw #disneyparks #distok #disneytiktok #disneytiktoks #distokfam #disneycommunity #disneycontent #disneytrip #disneyvacation #disneyrides
Disney Adults quickly added their two cents about the kid-friendly show turning dark and spooky at the drop of a spider from the ceiling, including @Michaela:
I was legit traumatized by those spiders…
Despite their best efforts, some parents like @jenrosebud couldn’t salvage their child’s frantic reaction:
my kid. sat on my lap the whole time and still freaked out. thought the gas was real gas

Some comments were less about present-day children and more about their traumatic memories of the ride, like @angelicaspicklez:
My only memory of going to Disney as a kid the bugs crawling in the seat SENT me into another world
With all of the startling stunts in It’s Tough to be a Bug, it’s an attraction that should be avoided for children with sensory issues. If your little one has their heart set on joining the insect extravaganza, be warned that their reaction could look like the meltdown on TikTok.
There’s a chance you may just get a kick out of it (or at least a bee sting), and It’s Tough to Be a Bug is a classic for the older kids who get a thrill from becoming one with the insects.
