Patrick Gibson’s casting as James Bond in the upcoming video game “007 First Light” has placed him in an unusual position: a Bond between Bonds.
The Irish actor, who starred in the title role in last year's Paramount+ series Dexter: Original Sin, headlines IO Interactive’s third-person action-adventure arriving in 2026.
But with Denis Villeneuve (Blade Runner 2049, Dune, Dune: Part Two) already confirmed to direct the next feature-length James Bond reboot (with Peaky Blinders‘ Steven Knight on writing duties), Gibson’s tenure may prove as fleeting as George Lazenby’s one-off outing in 1969's On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.

What makes this case interesting is that Gibson isn’t playing James Bond in the official film franchise but in a game that carries the same weight of high expectations.
The trailer released earlier this year highlights Gibson’s digital likeness, presenting a younger Bond in the midst of his earliest missions.
The visuals and tone suggest a cinematic approach, making “007 First Light” feel more like a parallel entry in the Bond canon than a spin-off.

However, Villeneuve’s upcoming Bond film — which will introduce a brand-new actor to lead the film series — is already positioned to define 007 for years to come. When it arrives, Gibson’s Bond will likely be forgotten by cinemagoers.
Nevertheless, the next James Bond in gaming will fill the gap before Villeneuve’s reboot, giving fans something substantial to engage with in the meantime. And if “007 First Light” proves successful (which it probably will given how the brand has delivered in the past with titles like Nintendo 64's “GoldenEye”), it could justify sequels that keep Gibson’s version alive in the gaming sphere even as the new film series gets officially underway.
