The search for the next James Bond is well underway—and while producers have held fast to tradition, fans and media outlets are still speculating wildly. One name making rounds? Lashana Lynch.
In a recent piece by Vogue, Lynch was listed among a handful of contenders for the next iteration of 007. While this is nothing more than part of a fan-casting, it still speaks volumes that her name continues to resonate within fan circles. After all, she’s the only actor to ever hold the 007 designation on-screen, albeit temporarily.

Lynch’s role in No Time to Die (2021) was historic. Introduced as MI6 agent Nomi, she was revealed to have inherited the 007 codename following Bond’s retirement. Her character was fierce, smart, and more than capable. But fans didn’t all see it that way at first.
Before the film even hit theaters, the trailer alone sparked criticism. Some viewers accused the franchise of turning its back on tradition by giving the 007 title to a Black woman. But the backlash overlooked the context. Lynch wasn’t James Bond—she was a new character operating under his retired designation.
In the film, Bond (Daniel Craig) himself says, “It’s just a number.” That one line became a quiet mission statement: the man and the number are not the same thing.

Still, when asked whether Bond himself could ever be a woman, key figures involved in the franchise have pushed back. Former producer Barbara Broccoli once stated bluntly, “Bond is a male character, that is just a fact.”
Daniel Craig and Ana de Armas have echoed that view, suggesting the focus should be on creating original roles for women, rather than rewriting existing ones.
With Denis Villeneuve now confirmed to direct the upcoming Bond reboot, all signs suggest the next 007 will resume its classic form: a male lead, a reimagined timeline, and a clean break from the last era. No actor has been announced yet, but speculation continues.
As for Lynch? Her name in Vogue’s roundup may not be a signal—but it’s certainly a reminder of just how much impact her character had.
