‘James Bond’ Reboot’s Diverse Lineup Adds Beloved Marvel Actor

The James Bond franchise is entering a new era, and it’s not just the films leading the charge. IO Interactive’s third-person action-adventure “007 First Light” — which includes Patrick Gibson (Dexter: Original Sin) as the titular globe-trotting spy — has assembled a cast that highlights a broader, more inclusive vision of MI6 than fans have seen before.

With Gemma Chan (Captain Marvel, Eternals) now stepping in as Selina Tan, Lennie James (The Walking Dead) playing Bond’s mentor John Greenway, and Priyanga Burford (Steeltown Murders) as M, the game is suddenly showcasing a lineup that reflects diversity in a way the long-running James Bond franchise— regardless of the medium — rarely has.

As revealed in the latest trailer for the game, Selina Tan is a new addition to the lore — Head of Tactical Simulation, a role that places her in parallel with Q while focusing on cutting-edge training. James’ Greenway, glimpsed in the trailer working alongside James Bond in the field, represents a far more active mentorship role than audiences are used to.

And Burford’s M makes history as the first time the MI6 chief has been portrayed as (and by) a person of color, signaling a shift in how central characters are imagined.

It's also worth noting that Kiera Lester's Miss Moneypenny continues with the legacy established by Naomie Harris in the Daniel Craig films, with the character having previously been played by White actors before her appearance in 2012's Skyfall.

The new cast invites a bigger question: will the film reboot take similar steps?

With Denis Villeneuve’s James Bond movie on the horizon and no actor yet confirmed to wear the tux, “First Light” may offer a glimpse of what fans could expect.

Could the next 007 be a more diverse interpretation of the character himself? While nothing has been announced, IO Interactive’s approach certainly raises the bar for how the future of the franchise on the big screen can be reimagined.
