In 1992, Disney released a fun family movie about a ragtag group of kids who are some of the worst hockey players in Minnesota. Even worse, their coach is a guy who hates kids and is only coaching because he has to in order to fulfill his community service requirements. However, coach Gordon Bombay is able to take these kids and turn them into one heck of a formidable team.

The Mighty Ducks stars Emilio Estévez as Gordon Bombay, Joss Ackland as Hans, Lane Smith as Coach Reilly, Elden Henson as Fulton Reed, Shawn Weiss as Goldberg, Matt Doherty as Averman, and Joshua Jackson as Charlie Conway. The film was a hit with fans, and a sequel — D2: The Mighty Ducks — was released in 1994. Two years after that, D3: The Mighty Ducks was released.

With the popularity of The Mighty Ducks franchise, some of the actors shot to superstardom and became household names. While many of the child actors either left acting or continued to work in smaller roles, several went on to have incredibly successful careers. Two of the most notable names are Keenan Thompson, who currently stars in Saturday Night Live, and Joshua Jackson, who went on to star in Dawson’s Creek.

Sadly, we have learned that Joshua Jackson and his wife are divorcing after just four years of marriage. According to a report from People, Jackson’s wife, Jodie Turner-Smith, filed for divorce in Los Angeles Superior Court. The two were married in 2019 and share one child together.

On Monday, Turner-Smith filed for divorce from her husband of four years, citing irreconcilable differences. In the documents, obtained by PEOPLE, Turner-Smith requested joint custody of the couple’s daughter, Juno Rose Diana Jackson.

The documents also reveal that Turner-Smith has filed to terminate the court’s ability to award spousal support to either party.

Bringing The Ducks Back to Life

In 2021, Disney brought the Ducks back with the release of The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers. The show saw the return of Emilio Estévez as Gordon Bombay, who is brought back to the Ducks by Alex Morrow (Lauren Graham) when her son fails to make the hockey team of his dreams.

Estévez left the show after just one season, citing creative differences. But not before a number of the film’s original stars returned for some cameos. The first season brought back Fulton Reed, Averman, Adam Banks (Vinny La Russo), Connie (Marguerite Moreau), Guy (Garret Henson), and Kenny Wu (Justin Wong).

Steven Brill, who wrote the Disney+ series, said that he always wanted to see Jackson come back as Charlie Conway. He also would have loved to see Keenan Thompson come back. Unfortunately, COVID made things incredibly difficult. He said that he hoped to see Jackson and Thompson return for future seasons.

Season two had Josh Duhamel step into the role of coach of the Ducks, but viewership was down. That was most likely due to Estévez’s exit. There were reports that Estévez had left the show because he refused to get the COVID-19 vaccine. Estévez denied the allegations and said that the only reason he had left was because of creative differences.

Regrettably, for fans, that will not happen. Disney canceled The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers after just two seasons.
