Marvel Wants a Different, More Unique Thor in the MCU Moving Forward

Thor’s story in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has taken more tonal swings than almost any other hero. Now, Avengers: Doomsday appears ready to recalibrate once again.

Unveiled at the end of 2025, Marvel Studios’ first Thor-centric look at 2026’s Avengers: Doomsday places the God of Thunder in markedly somber territory. The teaser trades overt comedy for reflection, loss, and legacy — an approach that feels intentionally closer to 2018's Avengers: Infinity War than to Thor: Love and Thunder.

In Thor (2011) and Thor: The Dark World (2013), directed by Kenneth Branagh and Alan Taylor, the character was presented with Shakespearean weight. That changed dramatically with 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok. Under Taika Waititi’s direction, the franchise embraced vivid production design and sharp humor, drawing comparisons to 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy.

The creative pivot revitalized the property. Thor: Ragnarok grossed about $854 million worldwide, becoming the top-earning entry in the series at the time. Reviewers praised the fresh tone, and audiences responded enthusiastically.

But the sequel, Thor: Love and Thunder (2022), pushed the comedic sensibility further. While the film still brought in approximately $760 million globally, audience reaction proved more mixed.

The Avengers: Doomsday teaser highlights Thor’s responsibilities as a father figure to Love — Gorr the God Butcher’s daughter, portrayed by Christian Bale and played on screen by India Rose Hemsworth. The emotional throughline suggests a character reassessing his place in a universe that has cost him dearly.

Rather than signaling an exit, the footage reinforces Thor’s importance heading into a chapter that many expect will reshape the MCU’s broader narrative.

As Marvel prepares for its next crossover epic, fans have speculated whether Avengers: Doomsday might double as a farewell for one of the franchise’s last original Avengers. Chris Hemsworth has now offered clarity.

Speaking on the Smartless podcast, the actor confirmed he has more appearances planned beyond the 2026 film, stating he’ll return “a couple more times” after Avengers: Doomsday.

“We've got some ideas to do something pretty unique again,” Hemsworth shared. He also cited Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige’s thoughts on audience expectations. “[Feige] said it’s cool because the audience now expects dramatic turns with the character. And whatever we do next—we’ve got some ideas to do something pretty unique again and hopefully be [different].”

Hemsworth has previously been candid about his hesitation to repeat himself, noting that continuing beyond the Multiverse Saga would require something “drastically different.” His latest comments indicate Marvel is actively searching for that next evolution.

Importantly, Thor’s narrative position differs from that of Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and Steve Rogers (Chris Evans). While Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans exited their roles in definitive fashion, Thor remains an active Avenger. His connection to Love opens avenues for more intimate storytelling even amid large-scale crossover events.

For Marvel Studios, maintaining Hemsworth’s presence provides continuity as newer heroes take center stage. In a franchise navigating legacy returns and shifting saga plans, Thor represents both history and forward momentum.

Avengers: Doomsday may reset the board in unexpected ways. But if Hemsworth’s comments are any indication, the God of Thunder will still have chapters left to write.

Thomas Hitchen

When he’s not thinking about the Magic Kingdom, Thomas is usually reading a book, becoming desperately obsessed with fictional characters, or baking something delicious (his favorite is chocolate cake -- to bake and to eat). He's a dreamer and grew up on Mulan saving the world, Jim Hawkins soaring through the stars, and Padmé Amidala fighting a Nexu. At the Parks, he loves to ride Everest, stroll down Main Street with an overstuffed pin lanyard around his neck, and eat as many Mickey-shaped ice creams as possible. His favorite character is Han Solo (yes, he did shoot first), and his favorite TV show is Buffy the Vampire Slayer except when it's One Tree Hill. He loves sandy beach walks, forest hikes, and foodie days out in the Big City. Thomas lives in England, UK, with his fiancée, baby, and their dog, a Border Collie called Luna.
