A 29-year-old maintenance worker was killed Thursday morning at Fuji-Q Highland, a popular amusement park at the foot of Mount Fuji, after a roller coaster ran over his abdomen during a routine inspection. Authorities are now investigating whether proper safety protocols were followed at the time of the incident.
Deadly Theme Park Accident During Routine Maintenance
According to reports, the accident took place at 11:50 a.m. on February 28 on Eejanaika, a fourth dimension roller coaster (one of very few in the world) known for its rotating seats and high-speed inversions. The ride, one of Fuji-Q Highland’s most intense attractions, has been a major draw for thrill-seekers since opening in 2006.
The victim, identified as Iori Kamura, was reportedly working underneath a stationary ride vehicle when one of its wheels unexpectedly moved, pinning him between the track and the train. Emergency responders arrived quickly, but Kamura was unconscious when transported to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Authorities from the Fujiyoshida Police Department are conducting an investigation to determine whether established safety procedures were followed and how the accident occurred.
In a statement following the incident, Fuji-Q Highland management expressed condolences, saying, “We are deeply saddened by this tragic event, and our thoughts are with the family of the deceased.”
A Roller Coaster With a Troubled History
Eejanaika, one of the park’s most famous rides, has previously been linked to multiple safety concerns. In 2007, a worker suffered a broken chest bone after a ride vehicle unexpectedly moved during maintenance, trapping him between the car and the track.
In 2012, a bolt broke loose mid-ride, striking a guest below and causing minor injuries. The incident led to a months-long closure while the park implemented new safety measures. The walkway where the accident occurred was permanently closed, while guests were also banned from wearing shoes on the ride. Additionally, all audio and video recording equipment was prohibited onboard to prevent loose objects from causing hazards.
Fuji-Q Highland’s Broader Safety Concerns
The latest incident is not the first time Fuji-Q Highland has faced scrutiny over safety. In 2021, the park made headlines when Do-Dodonpa, once the fastest-accelerating roller coaster in the world, was abruptly closed following multiple reports of riders sustaining bone fractures, including neck and spine injuries.
While Fuji-Q initially stated that the ride was under investigation, the park officially announced its permanent closure in March 2024.
As the investigation into Kamura’s death continues, Eejanaika has been suspended, with the park yet to confirm when or if the ride will resume operation this week.
