Marvel fans can always expect some fun cameos or celebrity appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (such as the famous Stan Lee cameos), but the newest installment in the Thor franchise has some very young members of its cast! In a new interview with PEOPLE magazine, Chris Hemsworth (who stars as Thor) and New Zealand director Taika Waititi (who directed the past two Thor movies and plays Korg) revealed that both their children and their co-stars’ children are in the Marvel movie.
“Chris’s three [and] one of mine [are in the film],” Taika Waititi confirmed. “One [of mine] didn’t want to do it.” Chris Hemsworth also confirmed that Christian Bale’s children and Natalie Portman’s kids are in the Marvel film — as are the children of “anyone who had kids in the cast”.
Hemsworth has three children (India, Tristan, and Sasha) with Spanish actress Elsa Pataky while Taika Waititi has two daughters (Te Kāinga o te Hinekāhu and Matewa Kiritapu).
Natalie Portman has two children, Aleph and Amalia, while Christian Bale has two children who apparently insisted that he take the Marvel role.
“I always encourage people to have their kids around, because it’s just a cool environment, and it chills the crew out,” Waititi explained when asked if “having kids on-set” makes the movie-making process easier or more stressful.
“You can get caught up in the pressure of making a movie,” Hemsworth added. “The kids come in, and they just pull the rug out. It’s a nice reminder that this should be fun.”
In the interview, Waititi and Hemsworth also revealed that their close friendship was a secret they kept from Marvel Studios for a long time, and that their comfort with each other has been a huge asset on set. Hemsworth also revealed that reuniting with Natalie Portman, the much smaller actress who returned as Thor’s love interest Jane Foster, “was super exciting” (even though Portman worked out more than he did, sometimes working out in the gym to build up her Mighty Thor physique for hours longer than Hemsworth was)!
