Marvel's newest Avengers trailer does something no previous installment has attempted.
Since The Avengers (2012), the franchise has traditionally introduced each film by showcasing its biggest threat. Loki, Ultron, and Thanos all dominated their respective trailers, giving audiences an immediate sense of the danger facing Earth's Mightiest Heroes.
Avengers: Doomsday heads in a completely different direction.
Rather than making Doctor Doom the star of the preview, Marvel has handed that responsibility to Thor, fundamentally changing how the studio presents its biggest franchise.
Thor Leads the Story
The decision isn't entirely surprising once you consider Thor's place in the MCU.
Chris Hemsworth is now the franchise's longest-running active Avenger. While Iron Man, Captain America, and Black Widow have all exited the spotlight, Thor has continued appearing throughout both the Infinity Saga and the Multiverse Saga.
Marvel leans into that history immediately.
His narration carries much of the trailer, while several of its biggest emotional moments revolve around his perspective. Instead of serving as just another member of the ensemble, Thor becomes the character audiences experience the trailer through.
Doomsday arrives December 18th.

Marvel Keeps Doctor Doom Mysterious
Doctor Doom certainly makes an impression.
One sequence shows him effortlessly stopping Stormbreaker with two fingers, instantly establishing his overwhelming power. The moment immediately raises the stakes for the movie without revealing much about who Doom really is.
That's a sharp contrast from earlier Avengers campaigns.
Marvel previously relied on extensive villain footage to build excitement. This time, the studio appears content letting Doom remain an enigma while the heroes occupy center stage.
It's a bold creative decision that makes the trailer feel very different from its predecessors.
Bigger Than One Universe
The trailer also highlights the unprecedented scale of Avengers: Doomsday.
Marvel is bringing Fox's legendary X-Men characters into an Avengers movie for the first time, creating a crossover fans have imagined for decades.
With Professor X, Magneto, Cyclops, Mystique, and other familiar faces entering the MCU, the film naturally has more heroes than any previous Marvel production.
That enormous cast may explain why Marvel chose to anchor everything around Thor instead of Doctor Doom.
Audiences need an emotional guide through the story, and few characters have earned that role more than the God of Thunder.
Heroes Clash Before They Unite
Another major change comes from the trailer's action.
Instead of emphasizing teamwork, Marvel fills the preview with battles between heroes from different universes.
The approach creates excitement without revealing the film's biggest confrontations against Doctor Doom, while also introducing countless new character interactions.
It's a clever way to market a massive crossover while keeping much of the plot hidden.

Marvel Studios doesn't abandon successful traditions without a reason.
After more than a decade of relying on villains to sell Avengers movies, the studio has shifted its attention toward character-driven storytelling.
Thor's prominence in the trailer suggests his role extends well beyond another supporting appearance. Whether he ultimately becomes the emotional center of Avengers: Doomsday remains unknown, but Marvel has already made one thing obvious.
For the first time since the franchise began, the biggest reveal in an Avengers trailer isn't the villain.
