Universal Orlando Confirms Official Removal of 27-Year-Old Attraction

Universal Orlando Resort is preparing to say goodbye to another piece of its history, and the changes happening at Islands of Adventure are becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.

For nearly three decades, one section of the park has welcomed guests into a world filled with ancient mythology, elaborate architecture, and experiences unlike anything else at Universal Orlando.

However, that chapter is coming to an end.

With construction activity already changing the appearance of the area, Universal has confirmed that another longtime destination will permanently close in 2027. And for guests who have visited Islands of Adventure since its earliest years, the transformation represents more than another routine theme park update.

Universal Orlando Prepares to Remove Historic Landmark

Mythos Restaurant, one of the most recognizable remaining locations in The Lost Continent, is approaching its final chapter.

The restaurant opened alongside Islands of Adventure in 1999 and has remained a major part of the park's identity for 27 years.

Known for its enormous rock formations, cavern-like interior, and waterfront setting, Mythos offers an experience that goes far beyond a traditional theme park restaurant.

However, Universal has confirmed that the location will permanently close sometime in 2027 as the resort prepares to transform The Lost Continent into an entirely new themed land.

According to reporting from WDW News Today, recent construction activity has included apparent exterior demolition work around the restaurant's distinctive rockwork.

Importantly, Mythos remains open for guests. Universal has not announced an exact closing date, and the visible construction does not mean the restaurant itself has already been demolished.

Still, the changes offer another indication that the area's days in its current form are numbered.

The Lost Continent Has Already Changed Dramatically

The upcoming closure follows several major removals from The Lost Continent.

Poseidon's Fury, an elaborate walkthrough attraction featuring special effects and mythological storytelling, permanently closed in 2023.

The Eighth Voyage of Sindbad stunt show had already disappeared years earlier, leaving another large portion of the land without its original entertainment.

These departures gradually reduced the number of reasons guests had to explore the area.

For longtime Universal fans, however, The Lost Continent remains an important part of Islands of Adventure's history.

Unlike lands built around established movie franchises, the original area relied heavily on Universal's own imaginative environments and storytelling.

Its unusual buildings, winding pathways, and enormous rock formations created a distinctive atmosphere that helped separate Islands of Adventure from other theme parks.

Losing Mythos would remove another major connection to that original vision.

Universal Faces a Major Decision Ahead of 2027

Universal has confirmed plans to replace The Lost Continent with a new themed land, although the company has not publicly revealed its theme.

That leaves plenty of questions about what guests can expect.

The timing is particularly interesting because Epic Universe, which opened in May 2025, has already raised expectations for Universal's themed environments.

With three major theme parks now operating, Universal must give visitors compelling reasons to spend time at each destination.

A major new attraction could certainly help Islands of Adventure attract additional visitors, but replacing The Lost Continent involves more than installing another popular ride.

The new area will need restaurants, entertainment, immersive environments, and experiences that appeal to guests of different ages.

Otherwise, Universal risks replacing one of its most imaginative original lands with something that feels less memorable.

The End of an Era for Islands of Adventure

Change has always been part of Universal Orlando's history, and The Lost Continent has needed renewed attention for years.

A successful replacement could transform an increasingly underused section of Islands of Adventure into one of the park's biggest destinations.

However, Mythos represents something that cannot be measured through attraction wait times alone.

Its architecture and atmosphere have helped define the park since 1999, even for visitors who have never eaten there.

As Universal moves toward the confirmed 2027 closure, fans still have an opportunity to experience the restaurant before its final day.

What replaces it remains a mystery, but one thing is certain: Islands of Adventure is preparing to leave another significant piece of its original identity behind.
