The Lost Continent may be heading toward extinction at Islands of Adventure, but Universal just gave guests one small reason to celebrate.
Demolition continues across the longtime land, with Poseidon’s Fury coming down and construction walls reshaping an area that has existed since the park’s earliest days. For months, the story here has largely centered on closures, removals, and questions about what Universal will eventually build next.
This latest update goes in the opposite direction.
Construction barriers have been pulled back from one part of The Lost Continent, restoring access to a location that guests had temporarily lost. It won’t bring back the attractions that have disappeared, but it does make a walk through this part of Islands of Adventure more convenient.
An Original Islands of Adventure Land Is Fading Away
When Islands of Adventure opened in 1999, The Lost Continent was one of its original themed lands.
Universal built the area around mythology, ancient civilizations, and fantasy. Guests could explore an environment that felt completely different from the other sections of the park.
The land eventually became much smaller.
Universal transformed a large portion of The Lost Continent into The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade, leaving behind a reduced version of the original area.
Poseidon’s Fury remained one of its most recognizable experiences until Universal permanently closed the walkthrough attraction in May 2023.
Inside the Temple of Poseidon, guests encountered large sets, projections, water effects, and a battle between Poseidon and Lord Darkenon. Even after the attraction closed, its massive exterior continued towering over the land for years.
Now, Universal is taking it apart.
Demolition has moved forward around the former Poseidon’s Fury site as additional pieces of The Lost Continent disappear. Construction barriers have become a common sight, and the land continues moving farther away from the version longtime visitors remember.
Amid that work, however, Universal has reopened one surprisingly important spot.
A Small Reopening Makes a Big Difference
The construction walls have shifted, and guests can once again access the bathrooms in The Lost Continent.
A bathroom reopening obviously isn’t as exciting as a new attraction, but its location makes this particular update useful.
The Lost Continent connects Seuss Landing with The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade, placing these bathrooms along a busy route through Islands of Adventure.
Without them, guests traveling through this section of the park had one fewer option available. Families with young children may especially appreciate not having to continue farther into another area when someone needs to use the bathroom quickly.
Their return also provides a rare bit of good news for anyone who misses The Lost Continent.
Universal isn’t rebuilding the land guests remember, and the reopening doesn’t suggest the company has changed its larger plans. Instead, it restores a practical piece of the area while work continues nearby.
Those larger plans could eventually completely transform this section of Islands of Adventure.
Which Franchise Could Move In?
Universal has confirmed that The Lost Continent will eventually give way to a new themed land. However, the company has not revealed the theme, attractions, or other major details.
Naturally, several major franchises have become part of the discussion.
Pokémon is one possibility that fans have discussed, especially as Universal continues its relationship with Nintendo. SUPER NINTENDO WORLD already operates at Epic Universe, giving Universal a major theme park presence for Nintendo properties in Orlando.
The Legend of Zelda has also appeared frequently in speculation. Its fantasy environments, temples, and mythology could make it an intriguing possibility for an area currently themed around similar ideas.
Another name that has circulated is The Lord of the Rings.
Rumors about Universal potentially creating a Middle-earth land have persisted for years. The franchise could potentially support attractions, restaurants, shops, and highly themed environments.
At this point, however, none of these properties has been confirmed as the replacement for The Lost Continent.
The Bigger Transformation Continues
For longtime Islands of Adventure guests, the reopening of the bathrooms is a small victory amid a much larger transformation.
Poseidon’s Fury is still coming down. Other familiar pieces of The Lost Continent have disappeared, and Universal has confirmed that a new themed land will eventually replace what remains.
Exactly what comes next remains a mystery.
In the meantime, guests walking between Hogsmeade and Seuss Landing once again have access to a useful part of the original land.
The Lost Continent may not be coming back, but at least Universal has reopened something while everything else continues coming down.
