In the summer of 2023, fans were enamored with Barbenheimer — the weekend that both Barbie and Oppenheimer were released in theaters nationwide. Both films were wildly successful, but Barbie came out on top. The movie was a cultural phenomenon, even winning an Oscar for the Billie Eilish song “What Was I Made For?”
In the wake of Barbie’s success, Mattel executives have indicated that they are keen to embark on new adaptations that resonate with audiences. The film’s triumphant run has emboldened Mattel to explore various childhood favorites, capitalizing on the nostalgic appeal of their toy line. This shift marks a crucial moment for the company, affirming the viability of cinematic adaptations of their toys and paving the way for future projects.

Building on the momentum from Barbie, Mattel has announced the development of a View-Finder Movie in collaboration with Sony Pictures Entertainment and Escape Artists. This project will adapt the iconic View-Master, a stereoscopic viewing device that has been enchanting audiences since its introduction in 1939.
Robbie Brenner, the President of Mattel Films, spoke to TheWrap and said he was “thrilled” to work with Sony and Escape Artists on the creation of a new View-Master film.
“View-Master has inspired generations to embark on boundless adventures, offering a treasure trove of storytelling possibilities for this film,” Robbie Brenner, President of Mattel Films, said in a statement to The Wrap. “We’re thrilled to work with Sony Pictures Entertainment and Escape Artists’ Todd Black to bring this Mattel franchise to life. Their creative and filmmaking expertise sets the stage to introduce a modern take on this beloved toy to audiences everywhere.”
“View-Master has long been a window to the wonders of the world, sparking imagination in kids and adults alike,” Todd Black, Producer for Escape Artists, added. “Teaming up with Robbie Brenner and Mattel Films gives us the chance to honor that legacy while creating an entirely new adventure for today’s audience. We can’t wait to bring this treasured toy’s sense of exploration to the big screen.”

With the addition of the View-Finder Movie, the list of upcoming Mattel movies continues to expand. Current projects in the pipeline include adaptations of Matchbox, Polly Pocket, Magic 8 Ball, Hot Wheels, Matchbox Cars, Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots, and others. The vast array of beloved toys awaiting cinematic transformation illustrates Mattel’s commitment to storytelling and engaging modern audiences.
Each film will draw from the unique attributes of its respective toy, aiming to present narratives that reflect contemporary themes while maintaining the nostalgic essence that fans cherish. Anticipated releases are expected in the near future, with detailed announcements likely to follow as production progresses.
