Matterhorn Bobsleds Closure Delayed — But for How Long?

With Disneyland’s massive 70th Anniversary celebration almost here, you’d expect the park to be firing on all cylinders. And while preparations are definitely moving full steam ahead, one iconic attraction is hitting a small speed bump right before the party starts.

Originally scheduled to close for refurbishment on April 28th, the Matterhorn Bobsleds will now remain open a little longer, with its closure rescheduled to May 5th. At this point, there’s no set reopening date, and with Disneyland’s park calendar only extending through early June, it leaves a lot of fans wondering just how long the Matterhorn will be unavailable.

The timing feels a little odd — after all, the 70th Anniversary festivities kick off May 16th. But when it comes to Disneyland, careful maintenance is key. Attractions as old as the Matterhorn, which first opened back in 1959, don’t just run on magic. They need regular tune-ups to keep thrilling guests year after year.

While the delay might feel minor, it could make a difference for spring visitors who were hoping to catch a ride before refurbishment began. The Matterhorn isn’t just another roller coaster — it’s a landmark of Disneyland history. And any downtime it takes now will hopefully mean a smoother, more enjoyable experience for guests once it reopens.

The Matterhorn isn’t the only attraction getting spruced up ahead of the anniversary. Several other experiences are currently closed or about to close, including “it’s a small world”, Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln, The Disney Gallery, Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room, Mad Tea Party, and King Arthur Carrousel. Even Chip ‘n’ Dale’s GADGETcoaster is on the list.

It’s a lot of moving parts, but the goal is clear: make sure Disneyland shines for its big birthday. With the celebration promising new entertainment, beloved parades, and enhancements to favorite rides, it’s shaping up to be a year to remember.

While no one likes seeing rides closed, it’s a small price to pay for keeping the magic alive — especially for the attractions that have helped define Disneyland for decades. Fingers crossed that when the Matterhorn returns, it’s better than ever and ready to launch guests through its icy peaks once again.
