On Sunday, March 13, it was announced that a member of the Marvel Cinematic Universe had passed away.
was a seasoned with a career spanning decades and projects like that go far beyond his work with Marvel. But we need to take a moment to remember him as the fan-dividing character Thaddeus Thunderbolt Ross.
Hurt made his Marvel Studios debut in the 2008 version of The Incredible Hulk starring Liv Tyler and Edward Norton as Dr. Bruce Banner. It is thanks to General Ross, in part, that fans got The Hulk. He was in charge of the project known as the Bio-Tech Force Enhancement Project, which was attempting to recreate the Super Soldier Serum that turned Steve Rogers into Captain America and during which Banner had his accident. It is due to Ross’ attempts to apprehend Banner that Abomination is supplemented created. Half of Harlem is destroyed, and Ross accepts Hulk as an ally–in part.

When he reemerges played by Mark Ruffalo, General Ross is now Secretary Ross, appearing in Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and Black Widow. It was the Secretary of State who delivered the Sokovia Accords.
According to MCU Wiki,
As Captain America publicly disowned their accords before going on the run with the Winter Soldier, Ross instructed Iron Man to bring them into custody. Ross arrested many of the Avengers, although Captain America would later break them out following the arrest of Helmut Zemo. Ross led the manhunt for Natasha Romanoff, although later deciding to forgive her after she took down the Red Room and ended General Dreykov’s plans for world domination.
Thunderbolt Ross was “blipped” and attended Tony Stark’s funeral after coming back.
Like another MCU actor, we lost recently–Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther)–Hurt carried the burden of cancer through his performances. According to Deadline, he was diagnosed with terminal prostate cancer in 2018 that spread. His son announced the news of his death on March 13.
Actor William Hurt is survived by four children.
