Almost 20 years ago, Disney introduced the world to Benjamin Gates in the hit film, National Treasure. Gates was a treasure hunter who stole the Declaration of Independence to not only protect it, but also uncover the secrets hidden within it. National Treasure starred Nicolas Cage as Benjamin Gates, Diane Kruger as Abigail Chase, and Justin Bartha as Riley Poole. The 2004 film was an immediate hit, and a sequel — National Treasure: Book of Secrets — was released in 2004.

Nearly 18 years after the release of the second National Treasure film, Disney decided to dive back into the treasure-hunting world and announced the Disney+ series, National Treasure: Edge of History. The new show starred Lisette Olivera as Jess Valenzuela — a young woman who is given a clue about a centuries-old treasure that could also help her uncover her own family’s secrets. The new series also saw the return of Justin Bartha’s Riley Poole, as well as Harvey Keitel, who played FBI Agent Peter Sadusky.

Here’s more on the Disney+ original:

Jess Valenzuela’s life is turned upside down when an enigmatic stranger gives her a clue to a centuries-old treasure that might be connected to her long-dead father. Jess has a knack for solving puzzles, and her skills are put to the test as she and her friends follow a series of clues hidden in American artifacts and landmarks. But can Jess outsmart a black-market antiquities dealer in a race to find history’s greatest lost treasure and unbury the truth about her family’s past?

While fans were excited to see the new series, it has been confirmed that Disney has decided to cancel the series after just one season. Deadline Hollywood was the first to report that the show had not made the cut. While it was never the highest-streamed show on Disney+, it was the only non-Marvel or Star Wars show to rank in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings top ten.

Even though Disney has decided not to continue Jess’s story, that doesn’t mean that the National Treasure franchise is over. Back in August, National Treasure producer Jerry Bruckheimer said that a script for a third film in the hit franchise was in the works. He even shared that the script was being sent to Nicolas Cage, who he wants to work with again. No further information has been given about the potential film, but we will keep our fingers crossed.

This is not the first Disney+ original series that has been canceled in recent months. Disney has also canceled The Mysterious Benedict Society, Big Shot, Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, Diary of a Future President, and Turner and Hooch.
