The Hall of Presidents at Magic Kingdom recently added a touching new artifact in place of the mysteriously removed basketball honoring President Obama. The display now features a fluffy golf head cover inspired by Obama’s dog, Bo, who passed away in 2021. This custom head cover, a diplomatic gift from Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe during Obama’s 2014 Tokyo summit, is part of the “Public Lives Personal Memories” display, complete with a placard and a photo of Obama with Bo. The beloved Portuguese water dog joined the Obama family in 2009, and his memory holds special significance, making this new exhibit a heartfelt tribute to the Obama family during their time in the White House.
The Mysterious Obama Basketball Removal
On February 18, 2026, reports emerged that a basketball belonging to former President Barack Obama had been removed from the Hall of Presidents at Walt Disney World for an unknown reason, with the basketball having been displayed in a cabinet dedicated to the personal lives and interests of former presidents alongside a photograph of Obama playing basketball and a plaque about his love for the sport. The photo and plaque remained in place but the actual basketball just disappeared with an image of President John F. Kennedy with White House pony Macaroni taking over the space in the display case.
The basketball had been on loan from the Barack Obama Presidential Library and its removal coincided with preparations for the Obama Center set to open in Chicago this summer, where the basketball may be displayed given that the museum is planned to have its own basketball court. Walt Disney World did not issue a public statement on the removal which is honestly pretty typical because they rarely explain these kinds of exhibit changes publicly.
The Timing Was Suspicious
The removal of Obama’s basketball coincided with Walt Disney World’s extension of President George W. Bush’s “Portraits of Courage” exhibit at EPCOT, which will be on display through the Fourth of July weekend 2026. This series of paintings, featuring over 60 artworks of post-9/11 veterans, first debuted in June 2024. The timing of the basketball’s removal sparked speculation about a political motive, but it seemed unlikely, as the basketball was on loan and could be removed anytime for legitimate reasons related to the opening of the Obama Center in Chicago.
The New Obama Golf Head Cover Is a Diplomatic Gift
The golf head cover inspired by Bo represents a diplomatic gift with actual historical significance beyond just being a cute pet-themed novelty item. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe presented the custom fluffy golf head cover to President Obama during a 2014 Tokyo summit, making it an artifact that represents international relations, diplomacy, and the personal connection between world leaders who exchanged gifts as part of official state visits.
The fact that the gift was themed to Obama’s dog Bo added personal warmth to the diplomatic exchange, reflecting how Obama’s Portuguese water dog had become internationally recognizable during the Obama administration with Bo appearing in countless photos, videos, and news stories about the First Family.
The Teddy Bears Got Moved
The Teddy bears that were previously in the spot now occupied by the Obama golf head cover have moved to another case within the Hall of Presidents lobby, ensuring that historical artifacts related to President Theodore Roosevelt remain on display while making room for the Obama item. The bears and book honor President Theodore Roosevelt, the namesake of what we today call the Teddy bear, with the two stuffed animals and book dating from circa 1906 when author Seymour Eaton wrote the first stories about black bear Teddy B. and gray bear Teddy G. encountering President Teddy.
The fact that Disney replaced the removed basketball with a new Obama artifact rather than just eliminating Obama’s presence from the lobby displays shows continued commitment to representing his presidency, even if the new artifact focuses on diplomacy and family instead of sports.
