OpEd: We Need EPCOT’s Food and Wine Festival More Than Ever

“Eat, drink, and be merry.” Three simple demands define EPCOT’s International Food and Wine Festival, and it is something we, as Disney fans, need to do together now more than ever.

The past 18 months have been an extremely ugly time for Disney. The fight with DeSantis–and, honestly all family-first Floridians who believe Parents hold rights above all other authority on how to raise their children–has flared into a front of a nationwide culture war. On top of that, matters company-wide under Bob Chapek reached their breaking point, requiring Bob Iger to come back.

Parks are finally getting back on track, but Disney movies and television continue to be divisive as their makers attempt to deliver projects designed to help manifest a world they think should be rather than entertainment for the world that actually is.

Half of Disney fans think that movies like Strange World and Turning Red are abominations, and the other half thinks that anybody who opposes the new Disney is automatically a racist, homophobic, sexist, or some other bigot-based scarlet-letter label. Intolerance against intolerance it an epidemic.

Everybody needs to stop antagonizing everybody, have a drink, and relax. Enter the EPCOT Food and Wine Festival at the Walt Disney World Resort.

For five straight months– July 27th – November 18th–, World Showcase will be alive with people from all over the world ready to eat and drink around the world together among 25 global marketplaces. Try new things. Make friends in the line. Share a table (or the top of a trash can). Buy new friends a round, and show your smile for free. In the meantime, the Eat to the Beat concert series will also be underway at the America Gardens Theatre at the American Adventure Pavilion.

We all need to chill. We need to be friends again.

Will there be people who can’t control themselves and cause drama? Yes. But on the whole, let’s hope Disney Magic can do its work around the Theme Park’s World Showcase Lagoon this year.

The 2023 EPCOT International Food and Wine Festival, presented by CORKCICLE, begins July 27, 2023.
