Original Magic Kingdom Attraction Receives Major Update After 54 Years

After nearly a year of absence, the missing African elephant animatronic has returned to Jungle Cruise at Magic Kingdom. Guests aboard the classic attraction can once again see the full scene in the African river section, where two elephants are positioned on either side of the boat, restoring the ride’s iconic atmosphere.

The right-side elephant, originally located between the abandoned safari camp and the “napping” zebra scene, had been missing since at least November 2023. Its disappearance left a noticeable gap, with only its sound effects remaining to suggest its presence. Even after Jungle Cruise underwent a two-month refurbishment in October 2024, the elephant was still missing. However, it has now been reinstalled, featuring a fresh coat of paint and fully functional movements.

Jungle Cruise, which has been in operation since Magic Kingdom’s opening in 1971, continues to entertain guests with its lighthearted, joke-filled voyage through various riverways around the world. The recent refurbishment primarily focused on cosmetic updates, including rockwork touch-ups and general scene enhancements. The return of the elephant animatronic restores the ride’s intended experience.

While Jungle Cruise has been restored to its original state, Disney World is preparing for significant updates across its parks in 2025. At EPCOT, Test Track is scheduled for a complete overhaul, aiming to provide a refreshed ride experience. As a result, neighboring attractions such as Soarin’ Around the World and Mission: SPACE are likely to experience higher demand.

Magic Kingdom is also undergoing changes, with Big Thunder Mountain Railroad currently closed for refurbishment. Disney is expected to enhance the ride’s track system and overall guest experience. Additionally, Astro Orbiter in Tomorrowland is temporarily closed for mechanical upgrades and cosmetic refurbishments. The attraction, which offers aerial views of Tomorrowland, is projected to remain closed for several months.

Hollywood Studios will also see adjustments, with Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith set to close for a substantial refurbishment. While the ride is unavailable, guests may experience increased wait times at attractions such as Tower of Terror and Slinky Dog Dash.

At Animal Kingdom, DinoLand U.S.A. has closed to make way for new experiences inspired by Encanto and Indiana Jones. Construction in this area is expected to impact foot traffic and overall park navigation, particularly around Chester & Hester’s Dinorama, which is set to be phased out.

These refurbishments and closures reflect Disney’s ongoing efforts to enhance and modernize park experiences. While some attractions will be temporarily unavailable, guests can anticipate improved versions in the future that align with Disney’s commitment to immersive storytelling and innovation.
