Authorities Called to Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean Ride

Guests on Pirates of the Caribbean at Magic Kingdom Park last week were in for more than a typical ride through cursed treasure and cannon fire when the attraction unexpectedly broke down, prompting an emergency response.

Three animatronic pirates, reminiscent of Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean, peer out from a stone jail cell. One dangles a key tied to a rope to entice a dog holding keys in its mouth. The dimly lit scene glows under an old lantern's light, capturing a moment of playful mischief.

On Friday, the popular Walt Disney World Resort ride came to a stop, trapping families on board for what one guest called “a LONG time.” TikTok user @randalekolbolt shared a video of the experience, explaining that Disney cast members and the fire department were involved in evacuating riders from the stalled boats. The attraction eventually resumed regular operation, but not before dozens of guests had to be escorted off by emergency personnel.

Pirates of the Caribbean has dealt with its share of breakdowns over the years, but it’s also been at the center of growing debate about its themes and characters. Originally designed to reflect a romanticized view of piracy, the ride has undergone multiple changes in response to criticism. The most well-known update involved replacing the infamous bride auction scene with one that features empowered female pirates instead. Captain Jack Sparrow, portrayed by Johnny Depp in the films, was also added to several scenes in the early 2000s.

Not everyone was pleased with the auction scene update. Some Disney Parks fans believed the changes sanitized the realities of piracy, while others thought Disney didn’t go far enough. In 2023, the ride drew fresh criticism when one female guest’s reaction went viral: “I just think this is kind of a weird ride,” she said. “I don’t know… It’s just a little bit rapey.”

Though the comment was controversial, other guests echoed similar concerns. “It feels like we’re the entertainment for them and I do not like it,” one woman said. Another added, “I always felt violated on this ride.”

Despite the polarizing opinions, Pirates of the Caribbean continues to draw crowds every day. Walt Disney World Resort is even preparing to expand the experience with a new themed lounge, The Beak and Barrel, opening later this year in Adventureland. The family-friendly lounge will offer themed food and drinks inspired by the attraction.

As for Friday’s incident, Disney has not publicly commented on what caused the ride to stall. Pirates of the Caribbean eventually reopened and was operating normally at the time of this article’s publication.
