It’s been six years since fans were able to venture into movie theaters and watch a new Pirates of the Caribbean film on the big screen. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales was the last time Captain Jack Sparrow had his story told. But apparently, it was not the last time Disney wanted fans to learn more about him.
Recently, images were leaked online of a PREQUEL story that Disney had planned on turning into an immersive experience!

In 2020, Disney signed a deal with Secret Cinema. Secret Cinema is a London-based company that takes films and turns them into immersive experiences. The first Disney film was supposed to be called Pirates of the Caribbean: The Spirit of the Sea. Spirit of the Sea would have reportedly had guests join one of six factions as they journey to Tortuga.
As you can see in the artwork, Captain Jack Sparrow and Tia Dalma (also known as Calypso, goddess of the sea) would have played a large role in the experience. We don’t know what the storyline would have been, but we do know it would have told Jack’s story before he arrived in Port Royale. Spirit of the Seas was set to open in 2020.

Unfortunately, as we all know, the COVID-19 pandemic swept through the world and brought everything to a standstill. The Pirates of the Caribbean experience ended up being scrapped. But, in 2022, Secret Cinema opened the first Disney immersive project with Guardians of the Galaxy.
Spirit of the Seas Unlikely to Happen
If you are a Johnny Depp or Pirates of the Caribbean fan, then you know that Disney’s relationship with the popular actor is pretty non-existent at this time. Disney dropped the actor when he was accused of domestic abuse by his ex-wife Amber Heard. Disney had been planning on working with Depp on Pirates of the Caribbean 6, but those plans were canceled.
Depp sued Heard for defamation and was awarded $10 million in damages. During the trial, Depp said that he would never work for Disney again. He said he would decline their offer even if they offered him $300 million and one million alpacas.
Despite how sure Depp sounded during the trial, it seems that his animosity toward Disney may have lessened. A source close to Depp has said that the actor would consider returning to the Mouse House for the right role and the right story. Disney executives have also said “never say never” when it comes to Depp’s return.
Even though it looks like Depp’s time with Disney is over, that doesn’t mean that Pirates of the Caribbean is done. Disney has reportedly bought a new story and script from Last of Us showrunner Craig Mazin. Mazin has said that he wasn’t sure Disney would be interested because the story was “weird”, but Disney loved it.
Disney also has a Pirates script on the back burner that will tell an entirely new story. The script was written with Barbie star Margot Robbie in the lead role. Robbie has called the story “dead”, but Pirates producer Jerry Bruckheimer has said that he does plan to go back to it at some point.
