Disney’s live-action remakes have been a major part of the company’s strategy for the last decade. Beginning with Cinderella in 2015, the studio brought animated classics to life for a new audience, often earning big returns at the box office. These projects, however, have also been lightning rods for debate. While some fans enjoy seeing these beloved films reimagined, others argue that the remakes don’t capture the same heart as the originals.

This division in opinion came to a head earlier this year with the release of Snow White. Even before its premiere, the Rachel Zegler-led movie was surrounded by controversy, and once it opened, Disney struggled to overcome the negative reception. The film not only drew criticism from audiences and reviewers but also ended up losing the company more than $100 million.
The fallout from Snow White forced Disney to take a step back and reevaluate what was next for its slate of live-action films.
The ripple effect was immediate. Within weeks of the disappointing Snow White box office performance, Disney announced the cancellation of its live-action Tangled (2010) remake. The project, which had already secured a director and writer, was shelved before cameras ever rolled.

That news left fans questioning the future of other remakes in development, fueling speculation over which titles might be delayed or cut entirely.
It didn’t take long for more answers to emerge. This time, confirmation came straight from the filmmaker involved. Academy Award-winner Questlove revealed that Disney had canceled its live-action remake of The Aristocats. Originally announced in 2023, the project had generated buzz thanks to Questlove’s attachment as director.
The musician and filmmaker’s involvement suggested a new, creative spin on the 1970 classic, particularly with its iconic jazz-influenced soundtrack.

Speaking on Score: The Podcast, Questlove explained how the movie came to an end after a series of leadership changes at Disney.
A new administration came in, and then I was like, “Okay, well, this is what I plan to do, and dadada, do the song and dance, and here’s some of the music examples and there’s some team I’m working with dadada.”
And then they had another administration shuffle, and it was like, “Okay well. All right.” And by the third time I was just like, “Maybe this isn’t meant for me, because there’s also, at least, like right now, there’s so much options I have in pickings.”
I mean, I would have loved to have done that project, but there’s like 20 others that I can get to […] there’s literally four other films. I’ll be working till, you know, 2029, 2030. So, just wasn’t meant to happen. Maybe it’ll happen in the future.

The news that The Aristocats has been canceled places it alongside Tangled as another casualty of Disney’s changing strategy. While other projects like Moana and Hercules remain in some form of development, it’s clear that Disney is becoming more selective about which titles move forward. For fans, this means that not every animated classic promised a live-action remake will actually make it to theaters.
For longtime Disney enthusiasts, The Aristocats’ jazzy, playful soundtrack and charming storyline made it a prime candidate for a new generation. With Questlove’s musical background, many expected a remake that could reimagine the score in fresh and exciting ways. Instead, those hopes are now on hold, with no indication of if, or when, the project might be revived.

Disney’s strategy shift leaves an open question: should the company continue revisiting its animated library, or should it focus its resources on original stories? Some argue that remakes keep Disney relevant to younger audiences, while others believe the studio’s creative energy is better spent breaking new ground.
