On April 28, Disney released its newest live-action remake on Disney+. Peter Pan & Wendy put a new twist on the classic tale that has been told since the early 1900s. What made Disney’s newest version of the story special was the colorblind casting. Critics and trolls were blasting the movie before it even came out. Many accused Disney of diversifying its casting solely for the purpose of being politically correct. Others said that they were just tired of Disney, yet again, remaking another film.
Right after the movie was released on Disney+ — it did not premiere in theaters — trolls descended on the film rating website Rotten Tomatoes. Many of them had issues with the fact that Peter Pan didn’t look like the classic animated boy who wouldn’t grow up. The trolls were so harsh about the casting that Rotten Tomatoes had to do something it had never done before. The website had to remove the Audience Score because it was too biased.
Rotten Tomatoes had the Audience Score removed for just about one day. The site is now back up and operating normally. Even without the racist trolls tanking the site, fans still don’t seem to like the new remake. Critics seem to think the movie isn’t all that bad, with the movie sitting at 62% on the Tomatometer. However, audiences are far less forgiving, and the film has just a 12% audience score.
The comments that are still visible on Rotten Tomatoes dislike more than just one thing about the film. Many took issue with the fact that Peter Pan seemed to be a secondary character. In addition to that, Tinker Bell is missing her iconic sass, Wendy doesn’t appear to have a crush on Peter. They also didn’t like that Wendy doesn’t appear to have the motherly instinct that she does in the animated 1953 film.
The story wasn’t the only thing the audience didn’t like. Many commented that the film was very dark, and it was sometimes hard to see what was happening. The one bright spot seems to be Jude Law’s portrayal of the villainous Captain Hook.
Everyone has their own opinion when it comes to movies, and there were some who reviewed the movie and loved it. So, it’s always suggested to watch the movie and come to your own conclusion. Peter Pan & Wendy stars Alexander Molony as Peter and Ever Anderson as Wendy Darling. Alyssa Wapanatâhk plays Tiger Lily, Jim Gaffigan plays Mr. Smee, and Yara Shahidi portrays Tinkerbell.
Peter Pan & Wendy is currently available to stream on Disney+.
