Last week, guests visiting Walt Disney World Resort experienced an unexpected interruption when one of the most popular rides in Disney’s Hollywood Studios suddenly broke down. One of the guests on board Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance during the incident shared their experience online.
On Friday, the flagship attraction of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge shut down abruptly during operation, leaving guests stuck on board for over 20 minutes. The attraction, which opened in December 2019 at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and shortly after at Disneyland Park, is known for its advanced trackless ride system and elaborate special effects. However, its complexity has also led to frequent operational issues.
Since opening, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance has been a fan favorite—and a source of frustration. Some effects, like the large moving cannons, stopped working early in the ride’s operation. Although Disneyland Park recently repaired the moving cannons on its version of the ride, Walt Disney World Resort has yet to restore that feature.
The attraction’s frequent breakdowns are often tied to its complex ride technology and safety features that halt the system when issues arise, most often when a guest drops a personal item. These safety stops can lead to evacuations like the one captured last week.
“Got stopped for 20+ minutes,” Reddit user u/Nathan4All posted along with a video of motionless Kylo Ren and General Hux animatronics. “We were evacuated ‘back stage’ and told we couldn’t take additional photos. Honestly a pretty cool experience.”

Walt Disney World Resort did not issue a public statement regarding this specific incident, which isn’t unusual for temporary ride malfunctions. By the time of this article’s publication, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance had reopened and was operating as usual.
