With so many new additions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in recent years (particularly with series like WandaVision, Loki, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and Hawkeye premiering on Disney+), it’s no surprise that the character Nick Fury, played by actor Samuel L. Jackson, has gone unnoticed for a while. Now, it looks like Nick Fury is coming back — because Samuel L. Jackson is in Leeds filming something, and fans believe it’s his new Marvel series!
SHIELD deputy director Maria Hill (played by Cobie Smulders, an actress best known for How I Met Your Mother) is returning in this series (presumably with more screen time than she’s previously had), and Disney fans or Star Wars fans will also be excited to learn that Emilia Clarke has a new character in the series! Emilia Clarke is an English actress best known for playing Daenerys Targaryen on the popular HBO fantasy series Game of Thrones; she’s also played Qi’ra in the poorly-reviewed movie Solo: A Star Wars Story.
Emilia was also filming scenes for the series in London this weekend, with sets being designed to make the London streets look like Russian settings instead. Marvel and Disney+ have not revealed details about her role, but if Emilia Clarke’s character has a longer storyline and a bigger part to play in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, then the actress herself would be just as happy about it as her fans.
She told Hollywood Reporter that “everyone I know and everyone I’ve spoken to who is a part of the Marvel universe – and actors talk — everyone has only the highest praise to offer. There’s a reason why actors stay in it. They’re so loved because they’re having loads of fun. So I’m down for that. Sure!”
Academy Award-winner Olivia Colman and Ben Mendelsohn (who plays the Skrull Talos in both the 2019 movie Captain Marvel and this new series) are also in the cast for this new Disney+ series and Marvel Studios show. Secret Invasion is most likely going to be following the plot from its associated comic, even though confirmation has been sparse from Marvel; apparently, the plot centers around the idea that shape-shifting Skrulls have snuck into society on Earth and actually “replaced” some of the superheroes that everyone knows in the Marvel world!
As with any film set or movie production, an impact was made on the surrounding area by the filming process. Many main roads in Leeds were closed down for filming, particularly on January 22, and Marvel fans kept a close eye out for the movie stars both on set and during their off-hours (spotting Samuel L. Jackson at dinner in Huddersfield). Halifax’s Piece Hall was closed for filming as well since it’s presumably being used in some scenes.
Although movie-making sounds exciting, anyone who’s been on a film set will tell you that it’s actually long hours, sometimes in uncomfortable conditions, and that there is a whole lot of less exciting logistics going on behind the scenes. Regardless of the less-than-glamorous realities from a day on a movie set, the fact that Emilia Clarke and Samuel L. Jackson are in Leeds filming what is most likely the new Marvel series is exciting for Marvel fans and particularly exciting for anyone in the U.K.!
