Disney World is no stranger to change, but the upcoming transformation of Frontierland is one of the biggest shake-ups in years. In a bold move, Disney has decided to repurpose part of the land to make way for a brand-new Cars-themed expansion, bringing the fast-paced world of Radiator Springs to life inside Magic Kingdom. While the project is exciting, it comes at the cost of several classic attractions that have been part of the park for decades.

Among the closures is Tom Sawyer Island, which has been a hidden gem in the park since 1973. Guests have long enjoyed exploring the island’s caves, bridges, and fort, but it will soon be repurposed for the new expansion. With the island shutting down, the Rivers of America will also be drained, marking the end of another iconic Magic Kingdom experience. The Liberty Square Riverboat, which has offered a scenic and relaxing ride around the river for years, will also be removed as part of the overhaul.
Disney first hinted at the Cars expansion during the D23 Expo, where it was initially believed to be part of the larger “Beyond Big Thunder Mountain” project. However, recent updates confirmed that instead of expanding outward, Disney will be reworking part of Frontierland to accommodate the new land.

The upcoming Cars land is expected to introduce at least two major attractions, including one focused on high-speed, off-road racing. Visitors can look forward to a fully themed Radiator Springs experience, complete with character encounters, new dining options, and immersive storytelling that brings the animated world to life.
While Disney has not announced an official opening date, construction is expected to begin in early 2025. This means guests only have a limited time to enjoy Tom Sawyer Island, the Liberty Square Riverboat, and the Rivers of America before they officially close.

This transformation signals a new era for Magic Kingdom, as Disney continues to introduce fresh experiences while retiring older attractions. Whether you’re a longtime fan or a first-time visitor, the future of Magic Kingdom is set to be faster and more thrilling than ever before.
