Pixar Animation Studios has long been celebrated for creating films that resonate with audiences of all ages, offering both adventure and heartfelt moments. From Toy Story to Finding Nemo, these stories have become integral parts of childhood memories. However, with the release of Lightyear in 2022, Pixar ventured into new territory that would quickly stir debate.
The movie, meant to explore the backstory of the iconic Buzz Lightyear, became more than just a space adventure—it sparked discussions about representation and inclusivity in children's media.

In Lightyear, the story centers around Buzz’s space adventures, but it’s the portrayal of a same-sex couple that became the focus of much of the discussion. The movie introduced Alisha Hawthorne, Buzz’s best friend, who marries a woman and raises a child together.
While this was a major moment for Pixar and Disney, it sparked backlash in some circles, with certain countries banning the film due to the same-sex kiss. The controversy surrounding Lightyear wasn’t just about the film’s content but also its message—a reflection of society’s shifting views on what is deemed acceptable for children’s films.
While many embraced the film’s inclusive message, others, like rap icon Snoop Dogg, found themselves grappling with the implications of these portrayals in family-oriented films.

Recently, in an interview on the It's Giving podcast, Snoop shared his candid thoughts on the movie and its LGBTQ+ representation. He opened up about the discomfort he felt when his grandson asked a question he wasn’t prepared to answer.
Snoop recalled, “What you see is what you see, and they’re putting it everywhere.” He elaborated on the moment during the movie when his grandson asked about the same-sex couple.
“They’re like, ‘She had a baby — with another woman.’ Well, my grandson, in the middle of the movie is like, ‘Papa Snoop? How she have a baby with a woman? She’s a woman!'”
“Oh s**t, I didn’t come in for this s**t. I just came to watch the go***mn movie.' ‘They just said, she and she had a baby — they’re both women. How does she have a baby?'”
“It f***ed me up. I’m like, scared to go to the movies. Y’all throwing me in the middle of s**t that I don’t have an answer for… It threw me for a loop. I’m like, ‘What part of the movie was this?’ These are kids. We have to show that at this age? They’re going to ask questions. I don’t have the answer.”

Snoop’s raw and unfiltered quote encapsulates the confusion many parents and grandparents feel when faced with questions about LGBTQ+ issues from younger family members. His reaction, though startling to some, reflects a broader concern among those who feel unequipped to discuss topics that have become more prevalent in mainstream culture.
However, Snoop Dogg’s unease also underscores the societal divide over LGBTQ+ inclusion in media. While the rapper’s comments reflect his discomfort, they also highlight an ongoing tension in family-oriented entertainment. As children’s films increasingly incorporate diverse storylines and characters, the challenge becomes finding the right balance between celebrating diversity and addressing the concerns of parents who may not be ready for such conversations.

Despite the mixed reactions, Lightyear has become a significant cultural touchstone. It was the first Disney movie to prominently feature a same-sex couple and a same-sex kiss, marking a pivotal moment in the push for greater inclusivity in children’s entertainment.
However, the film’s release didn’t go as smoothly as Pixar had hoped. Lightyear’s box office performance was below expectations, with some blaming the LGBTQ+ representation for turning audiences away. Still, the film’s release was historic, and for many, it represented a necessary step forward in normalizing LGBTQ+ relationships in popular media.
Snoop Dogg is currently scheduled to headline the AFL Grand Final on September 27, but growing backlash is calling for his replacement. The controversy comes shortly after an AFL player was banned for using a homophobic slur, highlighting Australia’s reputation as a strongly LGBTQ+-inclusive country with strict anti-discrimination laws.
