‘Star Wars: Ahsoka’ Season 2 Update With First Look at Recast Character

The galaxy’s favorite Togruta is returning, and with her comes the promise of closure, confrontation, and a new direction for Star Wars‘ live-action universe.

Ahsoka arrived on Disney+ on August 22, 2023, picking up where animated classics like The Clone Wars and Rebels left off. Created by Dave Filoni, and executive produced by Filoni, Jon Favreau, and Kathleen Kennedy, the series cemented itself in the New Republic timeline—9 ABY—alongside The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and Skeleton Crew.

Led by Rosario Dawson, the series follows Ahsoka Tano as she hunts for Ezra Bridger (Eman Esfandi) and faces the threat of Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen). The show’s ensemble includes Natasha Liu Bordizzo as Sabine Wren, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as General Hera Syndulla, Ivanna Sakhno as Shin Hati, Ray Stevenson as Baylan Skoll, and Diana Lee Inosanto as Morgan Elsbeth.

By the end of Season 1, Ezra returned to Hera and the core worlds while Ahsoka and Sabine were left stranded on Peridea. It wasn’t clear if the story would continue in a new season, a crossover project, or Dave Filoni’s theatrical film—revealed at Star Wars Celebration 2023 alongside other new titles from James Mangold and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.

That question was answered with the announcement of Ahsoka Season 2, confirmed alongside The Mandalorian and Grogu, which is slated for a May 2026 theatrical release.

According to a late 2024 update, Filoni is approaching Season 2 with a conclusion in mind. “According to [Daniel Richtman], the plan now is to make sure the series has a satisfying ending in case it’s canceled and doesn’t return for a third season.” The report adds, “We hadn’t expected Filoni to tell this story beyond a couple of seasons, anyway, but Disney+ could always push for more episodes if Ahsoka is a big enough hit.”

The loss of Ray Stevenson was deeply felt across the Star Wars community. Stevenson, who portrayed the mercenary Baylan Skoll, passed away just shy of his 59th birthday while filming Cassino in Ischia (2024). Reports linked his death to multiple hospitalizations tied to heart issues. The first season was dedicated in his honor.

While Dominic Purcell completed Stevenson’s work on Cassino in Ischia, questions lingered about Baylan’s future in Ahsoka. Eventually, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed, “Scottish actor Rory McCann, best known for playing the burly brute The Hound on HBO’s Game of Thrones, will replace late actor Ray Stevenson for a second season of Star Wars show Ahsoka, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.” Fans caught a glimpse of McCann’s Baylan at Star Wars Celebration in Tokyo.

This recast follows the established trend of reinterpreting animated characters for live action. Ahsoka, Hera, Ezra, and Sabine were all recast for the series, now played by Rosario Dawson, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Eman Esfandi, and Natasha Liu Bordizzo—taking over from Ashley Eckstein, Vanessa Marshall, Taylor Gray, and Tiya Sircar.

Eman Esfandi gave fans their first peek at Ezra Bridger’s updated appearance in Season 2. Shared via mandoverse_updates on Threads, the clean-shaven look was captured “before shooting,” according to Esfandi’s caption.

The image teases Ezra’s return to active duty, likely setting up a renewed mission to stop Thrawn and reunite with Ahsoka and Sabine, still stranded on Peridea alongside Shin Hati (Ivanna Sakhno) and Baylan Skoll (Rory McCann).

From orphaned thief to galactic savior, Ezra Bridger’s arc continues to resonate across the Star Wars saga. First introduced in Star Wars Rebels, Ezra was a lone Force-sensitive teen on Lothal before meeting the Ghost crew and Kanan Jarrus (Freddie Prinze Jr.).

As his Jedi training progressed, Ezra found himself on the frontlines of the growing rebellion. His encounters with Ahsoka Tano, Darth Maul, and Thrawn shaped his path. In the Rebels finale, Ezra made a dramatic sacrifice, calling on Purrgil to take both himself and Thrawn into deep space, saving his planet and vanishing in the process.

Years later, Ahsoka brought him back. Found by Sabine Wren in a distant galaxy, Ezra managed to sneak aboard Thrawn’s vessel and return alone to the central galaxy. His return reignites the battle to prevent Thrawn’s resurgence and protect the fragile New Republic.

From street survivor to Force-wielder, Ezra’s story is far from over, and his role may be more important than ever.

At the Parks, he loves to ride Everest, stroll down Main Street with an overstuffed pin lanyard around his neck, and eat as many Mickey-shaped ice creams as possible. His favorite character is Han Solo (yes, he did shoot first), and his favorite TV show is Buffy the Vampire Slayer except when it's One Tree Hill. He loves sandy beach walks, forest hikes, and foodie days out in the Big City. Thomas lives in England, UK, with his fiancée, baby, and their dog, a Border Collie called Luna.
