Disney guests have lost access to another popular character experience.
Stitch has become one of Disney's biggest commercial success stories. The live-action Lilo & Stitch (2025) grossed more than $1 billion worldwide, while the character continues to dominate Disney merchandise. A sequel is already in development following the film's box office success.

Yet despite his popularity, Stitch has a relatively limited presence at Disney's theme parks, particularly in the United States. While guests can meet the blue alien at Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resort, neither currently operates a dedicated Stitch attraction.
That wasn't always the case. Magic Kingdom previously offered Stitch's Great Escape!, a Tomorrowland attraction that replaced ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter in 2004. Following years of mixed reviews, the show stopped operating in January 2018, with Disney confirming its permanent closure in 2020.
International Disney parks have continued offering more substantial Stitch experiences, including interactive shows and themed attractions. However, one of those experiences has now been taken out of operation.
Disney Shuts Down Stitch Attraction for Nearly a Month
As of November 2, 2026, Stitch Encounter is officially closed at Tokyo Disneyland.

The attraction, located in Tomorrowland, is unavailable throughout November as part of a scheduled refurbishment. According to Tokyo Disney Resort's official closure calendar, the shutdown will continue through November 30, with operations expected to resume on December 1.
Stitch Encounter originally opened on July 17, 2015, giving Tokyo Disneyland a new experience dedicated to the character introduced in Disney's Lilo & Stitch (2002).
Unlike a traditional Disney dark ride, the attraction takes place inside a theater, where guests communicate with Stitch through a large screen. The character responds to audience members in real time, with conversations conducted in Japanese.
Each performance lasts approximately 12 minutes, with the theater accommodating up to 163 guests. The attraction combines animation, audience participation, and improvised interactions to create a different experience with each showing.
For now, however, guests visiting Tokyo Disneyland will be unable to experience the show.

The Oriental Land Company, which operates Tokyo Disney Resort, has not publicly detailed the work taking place during the refurbishment. There has also been no announcement of significant changes to the attraction's storyline or presentation.
Importantly, the closure is temporary. Disney has not announced plans to permanently remove Stitch Encounter, and its official attraction page continues to list the November shutdown as a temporary closure.
Interestingly, this isn't the first Stitch attraction at Tokyo Disneyland to undergo maintenance recently.
The Enchanted Tiki Room: Stitch Presents “Aloha E Komo Mai!” was also closed for refurbishment between September 24 and October 23, 2026. That Adventureland attraction features Stitch interrupting a musical performance by tropical birds and flowers.
The show has since returned to operation, meaning guests still have another Stitch-themed attraction to enjoy while Stitch Encounter remains closed.

More Disney Attractions Remain Closed With No Reopening Date
Stitch Encounter is just one of several attractions affected by Tokyo Disneyland's ongoing refurbishment schedule.
Cinderella's Fairy Tale Hall has been closed since October 1, 2026. Located inside Cinderella Castle, the walkthrough attraction normally allows guests to explore displays inspired by Disney's 1950 animated film, including artwork and scenes depicting Cinderella's story.
Unlike Stitch Encounter, Cinderella's Fairy Tale Hall currently has no confirmed reopening date, according to the resort's official closure calendar.
The same applies to Swiss Family Treehouse, which has been closed since April 2022. More than four years later, the Adventureland attraction remains unavailable, with Disney yet to announce when, or whether, it will welcome guests again.

Additional refurbishments are scheduled for early 2027, including temporary closures of Peter Pan's Flight, Jungle Cruise: Wildlife Expeditions, Splash Mountain, and Haunted Mansion.
Meanwhile, the situation surrounding Stitch Encounter contrasts with the character's history at Walt Disney World.
Stitch's Great Escape! initially operated seasonally before shutting down altogether. Although the attraction was originally treated as temporarily closed, Disney eventually confirmed that it would not reopen.
There is currently no indication that Tokyo Disneyland's Stitch Encounter faces a similar fate.
In fact, Stitch's future across Disney's theme parks could become increasingly interesting following the success of the live-action Lilo & Stitch. Disney announced a sequel in June 2025, continuing a franchise that has already enjoyed renewed commercial success.
Other international Disney resorts also offer dedicated Stitch experiences. Disneyland Paris operates Stitch Live!, while Shanghai Disneyland features Space Chat with Stitch. The character additionally appears in themed attractions and entertainment across Disney's global portfolio.
Do you think Disney should add more Stitch-inspired attractions?
