Fans of the cult-favorite film The Full Monty (a 1997 British comedy film about a group of unemployed men in Sheffield who decide to start their own Chippendales act) can rejoice: the classic comedy is getting a reboot with the original cast!

The BAFTA-winning film is, unfortunately, not on Disney+ for you to enjoy (and if it was, Disney’s more mature content and new parental control features would be involved), but the new reboot will be coming to Disney+ and Hulu! This new spin-off will apparently “follow the original band of brothers as they navigate the post-industrial city of Sheffield and society’s crumbling healthcare, education and employment sectors”. However, just like in the first film, this reboot will keep the overall tone “bright” and “silly” even as it explores serious topics.

Robert Carlyle (who Disney fans might recognize as Rumplestiltskin and Mr. Gold in the ABC show Once Upon a Time) and Mark Addy (who played Robert Baratheon in Game of Thrones) are both returning in their lead roles. Oscar-winning writer Simon Beaufoy is also on board to write the reboot.

“We’re chuffed to bits to get all the Monty Men back together again – now with a chaotic entourage of children, grandchildren, pets and assorted hangers-on – to see what life in Sheffield is like twenty-five years on,” Beaufoy said.

The reboot will have eight parts, and it will be streaming on Disney+ in the UK and Hulu in the United States.  The original Full Monty actors Hugo Speer, Paul Barber, Steve Huison, Will Snape, Lesley Sharp, and Tom Wilkinson will also be returning to the show.

“Twenty-five years ago, Simon introduced us to a group of funny, fearless and resilient unemployed working-class men from Sheffield and the world fell in love with them,” Disney’s Lee Mason, the Director of Scripted Content EMEA, stated. “We’re delighted to reunite the original cast for this brand-new series on Disney Plus to catch up with these iconic characters and what they’ve been up to since we last saw them on stage in all their glory, and we can’t wait to introduce a host of exciting new faces and characters.”

Production apparently began on March 28 in Sheffield and Manchester!

The Full Monty won the BAFTA Award for Best Film and was a massive commercial success. It was also nominated for Academy Awards (and won the Oscar for Best Original Musical or Comedy Score). The British Film Institute actually ranked The Full Monty as the 25th best British film of the 20th century; it’s also been turned into a musical and a play!

Are you excited to see a reboot of this beloved British comic classic on Disney+ or Hulu?
