Why Wasn’t There a Sequel to The Nightmare Before Christmas?

Officially, as many already know, there has been no cinematic sequel to The Nightmare Before Christmas. Producer Tim Burton is known to have refused to make a follow-up to his original masterpiece, which follows Pumpkin King Jack Skellington (Chris Sarandon and Danny Elfman), Sally (Catherine O’Hara), and their hijinks in Halloween Town. The film was directed by Henry Selick and featured William Hickey, Glenn Shadix, Paul Reubens, Ken Page, and Ed Ivory as part of the larger cast.

The Walt Disney Company considered producing a sequel in 2002, but rather than using stop motion, the company wanted to use computer animation. Burton convinced Disney to drop the idea. “I was always very protective of [The Nightmare Before Christmas], not to do sequels or things of that kind,” Burton explained.

“You know, Jack visits Thanksgiving world or other kinds of things just because I felt the movie had a purity to it and the people that like it, because it’s a mass-market kind of thing, it was important to kind of keep that purity of it.” He added.

In addition to this, Tim Burton has made it clear that he will never work with Disney again because of how mainstream and mass-market the production company has become. He explained, “It’s gotten to be very homogenized, very consolidated. There’s less room for different types of things.”

The Novelization of The Nightmare Before Christmas As a Sequel

Looper.com explains that a “canonical novelized sequel” called Long Live the Pumpkin Queen, was released in 2022. The book is written by Shea Ernshaw and features popular characters like Sally (Catherine O’Hara).

This story focuses on Sally as she becomes the official Pumpkin Queen of Halloween Town. As Disney Dining explained, “Unlike her undead love interest, Sally saves Halloween Town from immediate destruction instead of almost causing it.”
